Sticky Throttle

As many of you know, sometimes the Expy has a problem with the gas peddle sticking just a little during the first little bit of travel. I fixed mine by taking off the throttle body, cleaning it up real good with some valvoline TB cleaner, and I cleaned up the part that goes between the throttle body and the intake manifold. The truck doenst have the sticky peddle, and it almost feels like it has better throttle response, and maybe a little more power. I think I am just imagining the more power, but the truck feels better. I took some pics of it before and after. If anyone wants, I can put them on a website.

Yeah, I cleaned mine a couple years ago and noticed better response and a smoother idle too.

FWIW, Ford doesn't recommend cleaning the TB.

I thought they didn't reccomend it unless you used a cleaner made just for the coated throttle bodies.

No, they expressly forbid it (I read this in my service manual AFTER I cleaned mine)....gives them a reason to charge for a whole new TB and elbow instead of a $50 cleaning.

I fixed mine by simply cleaning the butterfly valve and inside body where it made contact.

To remove the sticky build up, I used WD40 on a lint free cloth and course sandpaper ((where needed) course sandpaper helped work in the WD40 without fear of loose grit getting away from ya), and keep wiping the excess away.

It would help to have small fingers to get up and in and around the butterfly valve
......
I also hear Premium gas (w/ cleaners added) helps as a preventitive, and then again gas cleaner too. But who wants to wait a couple tanks, eh!

How will Premium Gas help? Fuel does not flow through the throttle body.

If I'm not mistaken, it's not varnish, but more of a carbon deposit....at least mine was when I cleaned it a while back. I'd say it comes from the EGR valve pumping nasty old, unburned fuel laden, gasses back through the system.

If I take the induction tube apart for cleaning the throttle body with a cue tip and mineral spirits, I also clean the MAF sensor with a cue tip and alcohol. Easy, cheap and effective.
