9 inch diff question

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 1985 f100 with 9 inch diff. The guy I purchased it from told me that the "pin' needs tightening in the diff. I have since lost contact with this guy, so I have no more information, I apologise for the "vagueness" of this post but that's all he told me. I got the vehicle checked out buy a mechanic before I purchased it and he said the diff was o.k. I have just got in the back of my mind every time I drive it that this pin needs tightening. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Chris

nudgey,

Did he possibly say "Pinion"?

Also, why did he say it needed adjustment?

Does it whine going down the road, is there any rotational play in the drive shaft, to excess that is ?

Timken-The diff doesn't whine and there is no noises or play, I am just worried something might develop (given that I am a compulsive worrier).

Well, "Pinion needs tightening" could mean a few things....

Rather than guess them here I would take the vehicle to a qualified and reputable shop (one that you trust not to "find" things that aren't really there) and have them examine the diff and get back to you on what it could be. Be sure to tell them what you know.

It's possible the person who rebuilt the rear end did not have an impact wrench capible of tightening the pinion bolt down on the yoke to the specified torque, which is usually very tight. That would be a simple thing to fix at the shop without any real dissaseembly of the diff.

I would have it looked at by a good mechanic...better safe than sorry.

Oh..if you want to see the insides of the diff, or get more info on how to rebuild one, there's a great article on this site here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/9inch/index.php

Hope that helps.
