Front Axle Locks

Here in Utah it is normal to go from dry pavement to total ice many times before a trip is over. On my GMC vehicles I would just shift into 4WD on the fly but with my truck (99 F-250) I need to stop and lock in the hubs first. After a while, I quit unlocking them and just shifted in and out of 4WD as needed. The owners manual says I can do this up to a curtain speed but it says nothing of leaving the hubs in when in 2WD. Other than the obvious wear and tear on rotating items and the milage factor, am I playing with fire here?

No problems leaving the hubs locked. I forgot I locked the hubs on my Bronco one winter, and finally noticed it when really giving the wheels a good scrubbing in July. Never had any problems.

I've taken a 400+ mile road trip, at speeds right around 70 to 80 mph most of the way with my hubs locked. . .and that was over a year ago. The only thing I do notice (besides the scrubbing on slow sharp turns) is a bit more vibration through the steering wheel & pedals, but no ill effects.
