Hello all,
I have a 1978 F100, 351W, 262 crane cam, flat top pistons, edelbrock air gap intake manifold, and a edelbrock performer series carburetor. The carburetor is 600cfm. Should I be running 750cfm? And I've also read about stock air cleaners and snorkles running out to the front of the truck. Will the engine perform better with a stock air filter cover and snorkel? Right now I am just running a regular air filter with a ford chrome cover.
the 600 is sufficent for your 351. I have one on a 390 and i have no problems. A 750cfm is more hassle then good cause you would fine yourself having to lean it to work good anyway. I think open filters are better then running the snorkel. I have the edelbrock chrome cover and it gets more air then the snorkel.
fordeverpower, how big of a edelbrock air cleaner air you running, i bought the signature series one. i ordered the 14 in one, but they gave me a 10 in, i was wondering if that was to small, for my hopped up 390.
i have the 14 inch one. I bought it at advance auto. its for the eps carbs. I would think the one you have is allright but they look small on are big motors.
Might want to get a cowl induction setup, i am thinking about it on my ford, it would be custom through, but nothing major. That and a kandn filter would do wonders for your truck.
Stock type dual snorkle (like off of an 82-85 GT Mustang) work better because you get the warm air when cold to keep the carb from icing and cooler outside air when warm. Cooler, denser air makes more power. That's why all of the late model EFI vehicles draw cooler air from the fenderwell.
I run the stock air cleaner on my 460 now. It has headers, Flowmaster duals, CompCams 268H (with matching lifter and valve springs), Edelbrock Performer intake and Edelbrock 750 carb. It runs better when cold and just as good if not netter when hot. I as soon as I find a dual snorkle air cleaner, I am going to put it on there.
Ford always seemed to constipate and strangle their engines. I guess it was a cheap rev limiter.
You can find good dual air cleaner boxes on GM trucks and Mopars. Mopar motor homes with 440's have dual snorkel big airboxes. I add a second snorkel to the airbox if it does not have one. I also replace the GM or Mopar snorkels with Ford units, -just looks better
The open air cleaners pull in hot underhood air in the summer and can cause carb icing in the winter. Neither situation is very good for performance.
