Intermittent Oil PSI
Can someone help me out with this one please??
Here's the deal. 1986 6.9L w/ AMSOIL (twin) bypass oil filter.
While the engine is cold or warming up, I have normal pressure registering on the gauge (about to the "r" in normal) When the truck is totally warmed up, I register good PSI until the motor drops to an idle, then the needle slowly drops to zero PSI. Then when i get back on the throttle, the psi raises again.
Here are some things I noticed underneath the truck.
1. Slight oil leak at the return hydraulic fitting on the sandwich adapter
2. Hydraulic hose runs close (approx. 2-3 inches) to the exhaust pipe.
I'm using HD diesel/ marine 15/40 synthetic oil in the truck. should I step up to 20/50? Is the proximity of the oil lines to the hot exhaust pipe causing the oil to prematurely thin out and in turn giving an incorrect reading to the gauge? Or does this all just sound like I need to replace the PSI sender?? Thanks for the help guys.

I have approx. 185k miles on the truck. The AMSoil system was installed 40 thousand miles ago. Don't ask why the P.O. didn't use synthetic from the get go... I can't understand it either. It doesn't seem like there'd be much benefit from switching to synth. with 140 thousand on the clock... other than to slow the damage already done.
Ok, so here's the next question. In your experience, have you noticed any difference in reading between an electric psi guage and mech guage? I really don't want an oil line running into my cab - potential leaks! That works fine for my landcruiser, but I'd like to shy away from it in the big truck.
Dave,
I haven't tried to operate the OD unit in 2wheel drive because the front and back would spin at different RPMS. In 4 lo w/ od on, the front would begoing slower than the rear. Correct?
Just out of curiousity, how much oil should this dang truck take????
I cahnged the oil and filters last weekend.I put in 2 gallons of oil and drove it to work (25 mi.) and home (25 mi.) twice - after it had sat a while, I checked the dipstick and it read nothing!!! I tapped on the pan and it sounded awfully dry!!!
WTF????
I just found the place on their page that says the unit is locked out in 4x4 operation. Was hoping it worked in 4x4 for snowplowing reasons.
If you ever want to sell that over drive unit, please let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will pay you cash money!!

As far as the oil, I'll agree, depending on the size of your filter, that may be an extra three or more quarts, sounds like you have two filters....
I use a filter for a 95 powerstroke and it takes all but just slightly under three gallons to refill including filter, if that helps.
I had a 250 HD flatbed once. Near as I could tell the front axle (probably springs but they were wore out) was heavier, Dana 50 instead of a.... 44 I think that is the number?
It was a heavier duty independent front suspension (IFS)- still not a straight axle as in a one ton- Dana 60? that one is called I believe....
Only reason I knew that was the steering spindle wore out and the one used eight little studs on the 44 (or whatever correct number) and the 50 had just five big ones bolting the actual spindle onto the steering spindle (or knuckle, whatever you want to call it)

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
1. I'll hook up a spare oil psi guage temporarily to get an exact figure of what I'm running.
2. I don't plan on pulling my steering knuckle apart anytime soon to check bolt patterns, so can any of you guys give me the measurements on spring thickness?
3. Yes, Dave, I do in fact have 2 filters in my oil system -2 LARGE ones at that!

It would be easier to look on the build sticker- when you open your door- it will list the spring spec code... as well as your axle, tranny code etc etc etc.. someone on the board may be able to decode it for you or Ford could too.
heheh. nope. not going to sell you the OD unit. that thing is bad! i can run 80 mph if i want to and the motor only turns maybe 2500 rpm!

i'll get those codes tommorrow sometime.
