I have been reading the superduty forum for about two months in anticipation of buying a new S.D. for my work. ( res. contractor ) to replace the f-100 that I bought new in 7/72. but after reading about bent frames, ac that's not up to snuff and brakes that need work after 20 k I'm starting to have serious doubts. what gives?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jul-02 AT 10:45 AM (EST)]Welcome to the site!
These kinds of boards are one of the best diagnostic tools available. So people with problems or concerns come here to get help. Not too many people posting about how well their truck drove today, but there are 1000s of us who have just that kind of day every day. The SD is a great truck. A few of them out of the 1+ million that have been built do have some problems, but most of us are very happy. I'm sure you will be too.
I'm a passive member presently, because I have had *no* issues with our F350.
My wife and I jointly decided to buy a 2001 F350SD, 4WD, 5Spd, 4.30LSD in October, 2000. Since then we've logged over 25 000 miles without a single complaint. (If you're going to complain about gas mileage, run away now!) The truck functions admirably as a heavy hauler, and as our present "road warrior"--it's more comfortable than anything else in the fleet. Road manners are great, even with the Flintstone Steeltex tires, and the brakes are up for anything I want to try.
Air conditioning works a treat, even here in super-dry New Mexico. The truck does have the exhaust "flutter," but knowing what it is (from this forum) makes it easy to ignore.
yea, i agree with everybody else, these are great trucks! my 5.4 will run circles around our old F-350 w/ 460 and im 130 c.i. smaller. i get pretty decent gas mileage concidering im drivin a 6,300 Ibs. truck, and ive not had a single problem yet. and just think, in 10 years its gonna be easy to find used parts fer these rigs as many as there are out on the road.
Without meaning to condemn the the truck that seems to have served you well for many years let me say this. These trucks are light years ahead of any trucks that were offered 30yrs.ago. More comfortable, better handling, more power, easier on fuel, less maintenance,etc...
Concerning the brakes...Ford (and I suspect other manufacturers)have had some problems with rotor warpage ever since asbestos has been done away with.Larger tires along with late and heavy braking can cause these newer model vehicles to warp rotors more easily.I have heard that if they do warp and are turned, especially on the vehicle, they are less prone to warp again.
Go test drive one!
I believe you will be impressed.
I my love my truck... its the best truck I've ever owned... and I've owned alot of different trucks, all brands... and I've never had any better truck than my SD.
Most of us that post here are looking to find a "little extra" from our trucks and consequently some things dont always work.
You'll find that this forum is extremely helpful. Everybody shares the ups and the downs with their individual truck and anyone that inquires here will find alot of help from alot of people that share the same interest.....SUPERDUTYS.....(and a few crossdr...er Excursions)
Welcome and dont be afraid of getting a Superduty. It will be the best truck you ever bought.... millions of other SD owners cant all be wrong.
I have to say that my 02 S/D has not given me one problem yet,it has 10,000 miles on it,I pull a trailer with a car on it to shows and it does everything it was built to do with no problems. If you get one just get the right equiptment to do the job you want done!
Any questions you have can probably be answered in this forum.
Almost 87,000 miles still have the original brake pads, never turned a rotor. I think the brake problems were on the 4x4's. Never heard of anyone having a bent frame. I think the AC problems are subjective. Folks have different opinions on how well the AC works.
1200 miles on my 2002 and I have no complaints **knock-knock**
The only thing I see with the AC has to do with the large area of glass in the truck. With rear privacy glass & the sun at the back of the truck, the AC will freeze you out. But once the sun hits the big untinted front windows, it heats up. My $0.02 says get the front sides tinted & you won't have any issues with the AC.
11,000 miles on 2002 F250 PSD and I absolutely love my truck. no problems (knock on wood) I recommend this truck to anyone who needs a serious work horse.
