A mechanic told me he always puts synthetic gear oil in his front and rear pumpkins up here in MN. The reasoning was that there is no way to heat them up and in freezing weather the synthetics do a better job of lubricating the gears. Is there a Ford approved synthetic for front and rear end? Any thoughts or experiences?
Ford spec's synthetic for the rear and the front. Royal Purple makes an 85w140 synthetic for the rear and a 75w90 synthetic for the front (about 10.00 per quart) or mobil makes a synthetic equivalent for both (8 to 16.00 per quart)
i just changed my gear oil over the weekend and i put the ford synthetic 75w140 in the rear, wish i didnt cause thier price for the oil raped my wallet, and so for the front i bought a synthetic oil 75w90 GL-4 made by pennzoil, and the price was decent, i hope the oil will be ok. i asked my mechanic about syn. in the front and he said its a good idea because the front diff runs colder than the rear so the syn oil will help it engage easier, so i went with what he said, makes sense. anyways that is what i did.
Yes, all of thr rearends that come from ford (sterling) in the last 4 or 5 years came with synthetic , they say it has a 100000 mile service but I wouldnt go that far maybe half
