I had the first oil change done on the 04 at 1500 mi. I normally have the first one done around 1000mi to get rid of any metal shavings and early break in wear. Any other opinions on this?--Jack
I like to change oil early and often for anything new. I usually like to change oil more often than normally recommended up until maybe 10,000 miles. It may not be necessary to do that after the first few thousand miles, but it sure makes me feel better anyway It surely can't hurt though. Clean oil/filter is good.
I like that drain. It's a good idea. Of course, me being as paranoid as I am sometimes...I'd worry about someone being able to crawl under there without a wrench and drain all my oil out...or somehow it accidentally opening itself, despite the safety on there. I might look into getting something like that though.
Helpful hint!!!!
If you have any of those little refrig. magnets around that the magnet has fallen out of take one and place it on the end of your oil filter. it will help to keep any metal shaving from being pumped back into the motor. It may be an old wives tale but it makes sense to me.
That would work as long as the pressure and flow isn't so great that the metal is forced back out into the engine. I'm sure it does work if the magnet is strong enough. If you've ever changed your own transmission fluid, you'll notice the manufacturers normally put a magnet like that on the bottom of the tranny pan (inside). Also, some manufacturers use a drain plug with a magnetic tip on the oil pan. All good ideas.
I suppose there's nothing wrong with playing it safe, but wouldn't any metal shavings that COULD harm the engine be trapped in the filter on the first start-up? And if it's REALLY large enough to do any damage, wouldn't it's weight just cause it to sink to the bottom of the oil pan and lay there for the life of the vehicle? I've said a number of times here: in 18 years, I've never had a mechanic come up to me from the shop with a broken engine part in his hand and say, "if they'd only changed their oil 5 times in the first 5,000 miles, this never would have happened."
There's no doubt that a new engine will have some immediate wear, and greater oil contamination. But 1956 is right that the filter and magnetic drain plug should take care of that. You certainly can't hurt a new engine by changing the first oil sooner. But it really isn't necessary. Mine will be getting its first change at about 2500 miles. 4-5K after that.
Speaking of oil changes - in the new F-150 5.4 V8, is the filter in a position that doesn't pour oil all over other components when you drain the oil? Also, I took a quick look and it looks like I can crawl under there without having to jack it up to remove the filter and drain plug - is that the case? It would be nice not to have to jack it up.
The oil filter is on the driver's side toward the front of the engine. It's mounted at an angle. It's really only accessable through one small opening, especially if you have skid plates. Plan on getting oil on everything below it. Unless you're a Sumo, you should'nt have any trouble getting at things without jacks.

I use 5w30 mobil1 and motorcraft filters in my 98 4.6. This is the correct viscosity for the mod motor.
