Ford needs Big Block

i think ford should build a big block to go up against the 8.1L
votec V8. the V10 is fine But the numbers dont compare equaly. it shouldbe about 8L and should be a tourqe beast. i just want ford on top.what is the towing of the two?

the reason why ford does not have a big block right now is because when they tested the 460 against the V10. the V10 out preformed it as fas as efficiency and power. but they could give the V10 more power.i have a friend that works at a body shop. he had a V10 4x4 in and a hummer at the same time and he said he would rather have the V10.

Where did the more power and efficiency come into play? The 460 had a ton more bottom end. Ford does not make a gas engine to compete with chevy's 496 but how many people do you know that use their truck for towing regularly want to pay to feed a 496? The V10 is a great engine but it doesn't out do the 460 by any stretch. I have driven both. They both had enough power but the 460 pulled much harder.

The 460 might have had more torque off idle, but once the V10 gets to 2200, it blows the 460 away. I had a 460, now I have a V10. I have towed and worked with both extensively. Not one time since I've owned my V10 have I wished I had my 460 back. The V10 makes much more Power, and quite a bit more torque. The V10 is such a better motor there is no comparison. Not to mention gas mileage. The 460 averaged just under 9 mpg. When I towed, it got worse. With my V10, I get around 11 towing, and have gotten as much as 14 empty.

I'll take my 12 mpg V10 over GM's 9 mpg, one quart of oil every 2000 miles 8.1 any day.

I dont think Ford has any plans to do this, they have a modular motor that does the job and shares parts and processes all over the place, if you need more they sell you a diesel

I havent seen any oil burning 8.1s tooling around either, weird that an age old design would sprout problems this late in the game, I knew GM had piston slap issue but jeez a quart every 2k

I don't think a big block would be a good idea. Horrible gas milage. The Vortec Big block doens't out do the v-10 in my book. Sure the towing may have more umph but like some of you other guys are saying the horrible gas milage stears me away.

Whatever happened to the 3 valve technology on the v-10? Wouldn't that boost the torque a bit and add to even lower revs with better torque?

How about taking the "modular" V-10, and add two more cylinders. 8.2 liter V-12 - 3 valves per cyl, 450 hp 550 lbs-ft or so. It would use some gas, but would haul. Put a Torqshift behind it and spank some Chevys.

Ford has the technology to make the V10 a beast already on the shelf. Check out the articles lately in the different magazines about the 427 CID V10 in the prototype car that was making like 590 hp, as well as the Boss 351 V10 that was making like 500+ hp and 500+ torque, naturally aspirated. Even the new Shelby Cobra prototype has a 40 valve V10 cranking out crazy numbers. Even if they detuned these engines and made them pass emissions they would still blow away the competition. I have no explanation for why Ford is doing this other than incrementalism.

The few 8.1L I have seen at the lube rack where I worked part time burned way more than 1 quart every 2,000 miles. Being 2 - 3 quarts down when they came in for an oil change was not uncommon. Just like the northstar. I think they have bigger oilpans for a reason and that reason is so they don't run dry between oil changes. Wait until they get about 100,000 miles on them.

I totally agree the V10 has nothing on the 460 except reving ability, but who cares these are trucks. My uncles old 96 250HD SC long bed with the 460 pulled very hard throughought the rev band, and got the same 10MPG loaded or not. I swear my 5.4 barley gets anybetter milage, and I know the V10 is worse as I don't really haul anything, and they are worse than mine. I have a few customers that have gotten rid of their V10 trucks just for the fuel milage.

The current V10 out-performs the 460 for towing, acceleration and mileage. Pretty much a closed case to me. Ford doesn't give a crap about having the "biggest cc" engine on the market because they know the vast majority of guy who tow heavy and often get diesels. GM can have the bragging rights with the size of the 8.1L but that's about all it amounts to. The 8.1L only produces 6% more peak torque at a whopping 50rpm lower than the V10. Big deal.

Truck Trend 10/01 tested the 6.8L, 8.1L and the Dodge V10 in a shootout. The Ford V10 won unloaded acceleration by a small margin and the 8.1L beat the 6.8L towing by an equally small margin. The 8.0L Dodge V10 finished last in both tests.

The new larger cc Dodge Hemi due out for '05 will probably out-accelerate the current 6.8L and the 8.1L towing. I say the last thing Ford needs is an inefficient "big-block". The V10 gets the job done just fine-if you want more go diesel.

BTW-My F250 gets 11/12 unloaded and a little over 14 highway. I know a few guys locally with 6.8L F250s and none of them average under 10mpg.

I agree with most of you guys about the 460 being a very powerful motor,I am 36yrs old and have always been a diehard Ford lover and fan.I have found a love for Broncos, I originally started with a 91 silver anniver. 302 4speed auto, lifted 6" and 35's,then a 79 400m..not impressed there... then I found the one that i have had for the last three years,1983 Bronco it started with a 300 six,4speed and lots of rust, now it has gone from a 300 six to a 390 to the big bad 60 over flat top pistons, 530lift comp cam, ported and polished heads and intake(400hp and 500ftlbs torque) 6"inches of lift and 35's with the best license plate(H8CHEVY) this 460 has pulled my Chevy driving buddies from many mud holes and dragged them out of the trail with their prides on the tow strap..Ford will always be in this Family forever

We have a company in town called Redline Marine. They produce engine for most of the jet boats in the area. I was talking to a guy that works there and he said "it was a sad day when Ford quit producing the 460". He said that in their opinion that was THE best engine for installing in jet boats. The torque curve was perfect and it produce tons of HP. I asked him about the V-10, and he said "not a chance". They since went to 502 Chevy's.

Sorry...but do not agree. Ford really does not have a need for the Big Block. If it were profitable...then you'd see one. I'll take it one step further...Ford really does not need the V10 either. The newly redesigned 5.4L (with so much potential still out of that engine) and new 6.0L diesel are all they "really" need. A good example...look at dodge. They offer two diesels and the Hemi...that's it. The only reason they offer two diesels...well it has to do with cost. Some folks are not willing to pay the extra $$$ for the H.O. version.

Just an opinion...
