I have a 94 explorer which is gving problems when starting up. It will start up sometimes fine and then suddenly I will shut down the engine for any amout of time and then it will not tart up again. Sometimes is starts up it two minutes or 30 minutes.
Sometimes it will start with no problems at all but today I got off to buy a sandwich with my kid and when I got back in noothing. It sounds as if it wants to but never gets there. I thought it might be the ignition kill from the alarm. It's that kind of sound. After 30 minutes of trying it suddenlly turned on.
I'm not very smart up cars so I'm coming to beg for advice. Please explain in detail for me. Thanks.
Sure no one will try and steel a 94 explorer but what about the stuff in the car?? An alarm will draw attention sure wont stop them completley but will help. Also i would try to arm and re arm the alarm if you think thats what it is. I dont know about the alarm you have but on mine if i hit the button and am still in the car then go to start it when the key gets to on the alarm will sound and the starter motor wont even run, i dont know if yours is differant or not or if its something else. How old is the alarm, most places ussually warentey labor and the alarm it self for life, if you had it pro. done i would try one day not to arm it and see if it happends
I know nobody would steal it but it's the alarm that I installed when I got the car in 94. I don't think it's the alarm.
When I turn the ignition I hear a buzz sound then if I turn the key just a little more a I hear a noise then it starts but it's when the nosie is not there that it doesn't start.
I read about trying the selnoid test with a screw driver and it turned the car on so it's not that.
If the buzzing sound when I turn the ignition sounds does that mean it can't be the fuel pump relay switch?
You have to define if the starter fails to crank the engine OR the engine cranks and fails to start. The screwdriver is a good test for failure of the interlock or solenoid. The problem must be defined before you can have a solution. I do not have an understanding of what your problem is.
Sorry, the engine cranks but does not start. If I wait 30 minutes it will then start up. I hear a buzz sound when I turn the ignition which sounds as if it's the fuel pump.
The problem will occur when ever it decides to not start up. I had gone about 3 months now without a problem but yesterday it decide to not want to start up three different times.
The pump should come on for 3-5 seconds when the key is turned to on. The ECM relay powers the computer so if the pump comes on for a period, the computer is at least working at a basic level and the fuel pump relay is operating. If you hear the pump when it doesn't start, I would suspect the crank sensor. It might be worthwhile to unplug the crank sensor and plug it in again to clean the contacts.
On the front crankshaft there is about a 6" pulley with splines on it. Sensor is the black plastic thing on the passenger side. Checking the connection is at least something you can do. I had a crank sensor on a Jeep fail and I instrumented it for a couple days to absolutely verify the problem. Intermitants are always a problem and sometimes you just have to throw money at them. On these first generation, there is a seperate ignition module behind the passenger front headlight. You might also check that connection
