My aunt just bought a 2004 Ford Exc V-10 4wd I drove it threw town the other day and the Muffler sounded like it had a leak under normal acclration it sounded kinda like a vacum cleaner
dose anybody no whats wrong??? or is this normal???
A 'rattle' like sound or more of a misguided rumble? Could be a loose heat shield or something...on my old Explorer...the way they tack weld the shields on...well they can fracture the welds and the shield vibrates. My fix was like many others...get yourself a LARGE stainless steel hose clamp and put it around the whole thing and snug it tight...may take two depending on which shield...just a thought on what may be the cause...
I've found 2 things on my X that cause rattling noises...
1 - was the flywheel inspection shield on the front of the tranny. Loosend it up and put in a little weatherstripping tape I had (right long the outer edge) and tighened everything back down. That hushed up that problem.
2 - My CAT heatshield is now loose and rattles; mostley at idle, but at cruising speeds as well. Maybe I just don't notice it as much at speed, but if I get next to the interstate divider, I can hear it. Anyhow - I need to stoop off at the local muffler shop and have them re-weld it. They'll do a better job than the OEM and it should last the remaining lifetime of the CAT.
