no i kept going and it is not the flywheel i put it on the replacement motor and it does not make any noises. it is a 5 spd manual. somebody said it probably is the cam if the rods and crank is tight
Are the pushrods all in place, not bent and properly adjusted? If one of them is really loose then it might be the cam or lifter. If one is bent it might be a lifter or valve binding or maybe the timing chain slipped and a valve kissed a piston.
Timing chain slipped a few teeth would also cause things to run rough, or maybe the computer went out of whack. Is the distributor in good condition? All plugs in place and wires good?
I wonder if the distributor is not advancing properly when engine RPMs pick up. Don't know if your model requires lubrication and my guess is that advance is computer controlled anyway, but worth a check. Some of the older disrtibutors had a little grease cup under the rotor that you needed to fill with oil every once in awhile. I haven't done this in a long time due to the electronic ignitions and also forgetting to check.
This is getting interesting. Like I said keep the guys informed. I would really love to know what this one is, so someday I can say, "read this on the digest somewhere..."
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson

i was not running rough and had a lot of power and it has a coilpack no distributor. the valves are not bent that i can see and the pushrods look fine too. i will pull the front of the motor off tomorrow if i can and see what's up with the cam. it was just knocking really bad like a rod was about to get thrown but i even took it up to 60 when i got the new motor home. i wanted to see if it would blow. but it did not
This is starting to sound like a preignition or detonation problem. I haven't seen this kind of problem in a long time but then I am no pro.
That might be caused by improper timing, carbon deposits, swapped plug wires, really bad gas, running too lean and probably a few other things I forget.
Easy stuff to check would be plug wires. make sure they are actually to the right plugs etc. Timing is easy to check, but also check to see how the advance is working. Also could be due to slipped timing chain.
Maybe suck out most of the gas and put in several gallons of fresh premium, this is to dilute any bad gas and also decrease the possibility of preignition due to low octane.
More difficult things to check would be carbon deposits in the heads, doing a exhaust gas check for fuel mix, do it under load and speed if possible, probably need a shop. Or maybe one of those portable computer hook ups can tell you what the car computer thinks it is seeing.
Sorry there are so many things I am throwing out. I am mostly brain storming here. Hard to diagnose things without being there.
i really don't think it was an ignition or timing problem because it sounding like a sherman tank coming down the road at only 15. and it would do it as soon as it cranked. this car is completely computer controlled and it has coilpacks instead of a distributor. the and it ran really good. no power loss and bogging or backfiring. anyway i put a new motor in it and it is not making any noises so that's cool.
