I just went out and bought a 2000 F-350 w/ V-10..i test drove it and everything worked out fine. It has about 33,000 miles on it. I am now hearing a weird sound that is comming from the engine compartment. It only happens when you start to get on the gas. if the truck is in neutral and you rev the engine it will not happen. it sounds like machine gun going off but much softer in sound. should i just take it to the dealer and let them look at it? Any info would be great thanks!
FX, If you have an auto tranny than it is probably the torque converter dust cover. located on the front of the tranny. The aluminum cover rattles. On this site it is called a flutter.
ok thanks for the info...I will check that out and see if that is what is causing the noise..the truck still has to go back because it is leaking oil where the drive shaft hooks up to the gearbox...I think the seal went bad
I have a 2000 F250 SC LB 4x4 V10 and had three noise/vibration problems. The first was when I would hit the gas and the engine would go up to around 2,500 - 2,800 rpm. It sound like an exhaust leak. I went to the dealer and they said their was a tech bulletin about the 2000 and older Y pipe. They fixed it at a small price and the problem went away. The second was one of the baffles inside the muffler started vibrating around 2,000 rpm. Replaced the muffler and that problem went away. The last one, I fixed today, was the thin metal torque converter cover on the front of the tranny (two bolts). It would vibrate around 1,900 rpm. I posted how I fixed this in the V10 forum (a little velcro).
I went through a frustrating time last year trying to determine exactly what the flutter sound is. In the end I could not learn anything definitive. My sound occurs only between 1700 and 2000 rpm, more commonly about 18 or 1900. It is more a fluttering pressure sound that affects your ears, rather than the sound of something rattling as some have described. Similar, but much less and not exactly the same kind of pressure you might hear if only one window was open a bit on the highway.

Flutter: A sound made within the exhaust tubing caused by exhaust pulses colliding with each other at the Y-pipe.
Ford "fixed" this by "necking down" the passenger's side pipe where it meets the driver's side. This "necking down" created a difference in exhaust velocities enough to eliminate the sound.
Many know that this "necking down" also hampered performance.
