ok, i want to know where i can find a lift cam for my 302 (cheap).
I love the sound of it and was just wondering where i can get one and any modifications that would need to be made
Well, my experience with small blocks is they don't have a lot of bottom-end torque to begin with and if you put a lumpy cam in it, well, it will be a dog in a truck. jmo
he has a point. but small blocks have alot more torque than the alternitives. Anti pump up lifters with a little warmer cam is a good comprimise. The lifters dont give full lift at lower revs because they are designed to leak oil pressure fast enough to decrease duration and lift, but slow enough to take full advantage of the cam at 2500+ revs. not sure if they will give you the lope at idle, but you should look into them. I know rhode makes them, and i think crane and comp does too. The lope comes from the higher durations (how long the valves are open) longer valve overlap (when both valves are open at the same time) and this gives the carb a poor vacuume signal at idle and the carb cant do a whole lot of fuel metering when there are low vacuume levels. The higher the duration the cam- the higher in the rev range the power band is. 208-215ish @ .050 will give you good low end torque and economy/driveability, and up to 220 is a mid range motor, and 240 are screaming deamons.
i got a good and cheap cam from orielies. it is a mellings. i went in and asked for something with a little lope to it. he ordered it and i put it straight up when i built my 302. but i called mellings to findout the specs and to see what torque convertor and gears i needed and they said the part number i had was 1 step over stock like an rv cam and was supposed to be used with stock gearing and stock convertor.and i don't think that rv cams are supposed to lope hard like my motor does. i know it needs a stall and different gears so i have reason to believe that they mislabeled my cam at the factory with their rv cam. i paid 78 dollars and the other cam at oreily's was 318 or so.
