steel vs. molychrome

Can someone shed a little light on the difference of rings? The clerk at my Auto store told me that steel and molychrome rings were the same price. I have heard that molychrome are harder to seat. Are there any great advantages, as the rest of the engine is stock? Which should I go with? Thanks Uncle Jesse

The "chrome moly" rings are a harder ring. They take a little longer to seat, but they usually last a lot longer.

chromemoly rings are better they will last for at least 100,000 mi. use straight w30 weight oil for 3,000 mi to break them in. then use Mobil 1 and you'll never have to worry about them again.

Don't forget, that these harder more durable rings have a big impact on the softer cast iron cylinder walls. The rings don't wear as fast because the cylinder walls are now wearing faster. Engines that have only had these harder rings intalled never last for as many rebuilds as engines that have had regular rings used in them. I am sure there are some exceptions because of some unusually durable blocks. Still, the usual results are accelerated cylinder wall wear.

The regular rings are also harder than the soft cast iron.

The chrome moly rings are coated with molybdenum, which is a lubricant, (actually its a mineral/rock, but it lubricates as well). Long range rifle competitors have been using the Moly for years because it prevents excessive wear and tear on the barrels, and even though the barrels see a lot more abuse than your motor ever will, it provides a similar function.

I believe the hone finish is different for steel vs. chrome moly rings too. Might want to check into that when you decide which way to go.

Chrome moly rings seat faster, iron rings last longer, and I've never seen steel rings (but I have not seen everything yet)

Are cylinder sleeves cast iron? I thought they were something different, but now that it was mentioned, I don't really know what they are made of.

Chrome moly rings do seat faster and last longer. They only cost a little more. They also require a different grit on the final hone. I will never use anything but chrome moly rings.

The instruction sheet for the last set of moly rings I installed said to seat the rings, do three wot runs from low rpm and they are seated. Seemed to work rather well (not to mention it was lots of fun)
