distributor 351M

Was replacing the distributor and the truck got pushed. I was told to remove #1 plug and slowly crank motor until compression was felt, then to crank motor until pointer and 0 degrees lined up. I could never get the pointer and 0 to line up. Am I doing the right thing? Help, PLease!!!!

Take all your plugs out and turn it over with a socket on the crank nut. The compression on the other cylinders is making it hard for you to land where you want. This also makes it easier to rock the engine when stabbing the distributor to get it to land on the pump drive rod. GL

Maybe I did it wrong, but the last time I took plugs out and tried to turn it over with a breaker bar, the socket slipped off and it spun over 3 times. Oh, I get it, the socket has to stay ON the balancer bolt.
