I ran into a problem
my 66 with a 390... I went to pull the oil pan, it wont come out with the motor in the truck
any ideas on how to get it out w/o using a cherry picker, as I dont own one?
I thought about jacking on the flat spott on the bell housing
I got mine out, Andy, to do the rear seal. I removed the rad hose ends and mount bolts and jacked it up on the balancer far enough to put 2x lumber in the mount. The dual exhaust went up with the engine, no binding. Watch everything carefully as you jack it up - my tall "Mercury" valve cover ruined the throttle cable. I didn't have to remove the oil pump pickup. I'm not so proud to tell you that I did this job twice in one day (same rear seal)!. The second attempt took about two hours, seal and all. Good luck!

I used a 4x4 block of wood with a shallow notch cut in it to prevent it from kicking out. Frankly, I was more concerned about a seal leak resulting, but none did.

Yea, I was going to use a bottle jack if I did the crank, but Im not sure on that one
Thanks again for the information
maybe someone else has an idear that is less "iffy" to me
But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do
Andy, I did this very thing, but I jacked the engine up using a 2x4 on the oil pan. It did ruin my throttle cable, because I didn't take it off first, but I didn't have to remove anything else. I suggest you jack it up just enough to put the 2x4 under the engine mounts (and on top of the engine perches) and no more.
You will find it necessary to drop the oil pan, then drop the oil pump to pull the pan out of the truck.
When you re-install it, make sure the hex oil pump drive shaft is securely seated in the bottom of the distributor, otherwise you will not have oil pressure when you re-start.
Theres no way to get in there to undo the oil pump as it is right now, or I would have done that
I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them
As for having oil pressure on fire up, I know i will have it...
I prime it with a drill and let it flow until my drill is hard to turn.
If I use a battery powered drill, I use it til it goes almost dead, lubes it up a bit
I will make sure it is seated first tho.
I have changed gaskets on pans before but not on my truck. The method used was to jack the front of the motor up under the Harmonic balancer. Use plenty of wood for supports, even under the motor mounts once it's up and go slow. I would jack twice and then check every thing for clearance before moving on to another two pumps....
