Tire balancing

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-02 AT 10:38 AM (EST)]I have swapped the original tires and rims back a few times during this whole process and the originals give no vibration so I know it has to be the tires and the rims. I know its not the rims because I saw them balance just the rims (without) tires just to see if they were defective. They called for like 1/4oz each. It is definetly the tires. I guess the all terrains are made for the highway and the mud terrains are not.

I have heard from quite a few people (after I bought the rims) say that the 16.5 rims are extra hard to balance and usually give a harsh ride due the bead taper. Anyone agree with this?

I guess I will give this GSP9700 a shot. They charge 23 bucks a tire at les Schwaab here in town. I am sick of sinking money into these crap tires.

Tire balancing

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-02 AT 10:58 AM (EST)]Fair enough,

Makes me kinda glad I didn't go for the Mud Terrains, I was really close. They definately look better than the All Terrains.

Anyhoo, good luck getting it sorted out.

They mounted and balanced my tires/rims in about 20 minutes with no problems, I love my BFG MT'S and have no problems what so ever.
They are agressive, so I expected some tire noise but have no vibrations other than when at an idle roll, you can feel the wider tread pattern on the pavement.
My 16.5's ride like any other rim I've used in the past (street use)
I wish they made them in a 38" , I wouldn't hesitate to bolt them on my rig.

Tire balancing

I just slung a set of 35's under my '02 SuperDuty on a set of Weld Racing wheels.. I didn't even bother with traditional balancing. I had the shop use a product called Equal for "on the fly" balancing.

This stuff looks like sand and you need a special device to pump it into the tire if it's already mounted, but if the tires aren't mounted, ya just pour it into the carcass before they are. It seems to be doing the trick. I've put about 400 miles on this setup and not a wiggle.

There are TONS of distributors (I got mine through 4 Wheel Parts) but it's manufactured by International Marketing and they do have a distributor locator on their web site at:

http://www.imiproducts.com/imi_htmlcode/imi_frame/imi_fs_loca.html

I am in no way affiliated with International Marketing or any other organization that sells this product. I'm just a satisfied customer.

I called Les Schwaab to get it installed and they say it doesn't really work that well. Anyone else tried it? They want 80 bucks to do the set.

Tire balancing

I replaced the Equal in my tires. I paid 40 dollars for it to be installed. I added all the way up to 8 oz. in each tire. It never did balance. It was way off.
I had that all taken out the had a road force balance done with that hunter machine. Now it's fine.
I know of several people, the equal worked fine. I'm even the one to refered them. It worked great in my RV tires. It also worked great in the tires in my previous truck, but that had a lead weight balance, the equal was to just finish the balance. That's the two ways you can use it. By it self or with a traditional lead weight balance.

Tire balancing

I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH GOODYEAR. THEY ZEROED OUT ON THE BALANCER, EVEN AFTER IT WAS CALIBRATED. MY TIRE DEALER SAID I WAS CRAZY. THE MAX WEIGHT USED WAS 2.5 OZ. WE CHANGED RIMS, ROTATED THE TIRES 180 DEGREES ON THE RIMS AND NOTHING WORKED. JUST SO HAPPENED THE SAME DAY ANOTHER TRUCK GOT THE SAME TIRES AND AFTER A TRIP UP THE ROAD, HE SAID TAKE THIS JUNK OFF MY TRUCK. SO THERE WERE TWO SETS THAT HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM. I REPLACED THE GOODYEAR WITH BRIDGESTONE A/T'S AND THEY ZEROED OUT FINE AND RIDE FINE. THE ONLY ASSUMPTION WE CAME UP WITH WAS THERE WAS A HEAVY SPOT IN THE TIRES AND EVEN THOUGH THE WHEEL AND TIRE BALANCED OUT TOGETHER, THE HEAVY SPOT GAVE THE TERRIBLE RIDE. I WOULD ASK YOUR TIRE DEALER TO CHECK THE CALIBRATION ON HIS BALANCER FIRST, TRY IT ONE MORE TIME AND IF THIS DOES NOT WORK. ONE MORE THING, WHEN THEY SLAP THE GOOP ON THE TIRE WHEN MOUNTING, MY TIRES ACTUALLY SPUN ON THE WHEEL AND THREW THA BALANCE OFF. EVIDENTLY IT TAKES A WHILE FOR THIS GOOP TO WASH OUT OF THE BEAD FOR THE TIRE TO SEAT FIRMLY. THE WAY WE FOUND THIS OUT WAS AFTER MOUNTING AND BALANCING, I TOOK A TIRE PENCIL, MARKED THE TIRE AND WHEEL AND WATCHED TO SEE IF IT SPUN. AND SURE ENOUGH, AFTER 50-60 MILES, YOU SAW WHERE IT HAD MOVED ON THE RIM, THIS THROWING THA BALANCE OFF. I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BFG, THOUGH SINCE I HAD A SET OF 33X12.50X16.5 ON MY '90 F-250 AND THEY RODE FINE AND I GOT 62,000 MILES OUT OF THEM. I WOULD COMPLAIN UNTIL THE END, BECAUSE THEY LOOK SO GOOD ON YOUR TRUCK, BUT IF THEY ARE GOING TO RIDE TERRIBLE, I WOULD FIND ANOTHER BRAND. THERE ARE OTHER COOL TIRES AVAILABLE.

Tire balancing

I finally got my tires to ride right. I got them balanced at Les Schwaab on thier "Road Force" machine. Apparently it applies force to the tire while it is being balanced. They only used about 5oz. a tire. 20 bucks a tire is mighty steep but well worth it. It rides like a Cadillac now, I mean Lincoln.

I knew it would be the only way you would like your new tires.

The road force balancer will be the only way to balance tires in the future. Just have to wait for tire dealers to put them in. It's just another new way of doing things. Before spin balance it was just bubble balnce.

I have the X-Terains with the huge tread blocks. The only way I didn't have vibration was with the road force. I had less than 2 and half on each tire. Traditional spin had over 12 on two of the tires.
