PowerStroke or V10??
I'm new to the board and am getting ready to buy a 02 F250 4x4. Can't seem to decide between the powerstroke or the v10. I will be pulling a couple of motorcycles, a bass boat, or my racecar. BUT, I will also be driving it everyday. That leads me to gas milage. I realize that neither engine is that great but like I said, I will be driving it everyday so a couple of MPG's does matter. And what about drivability both around town and highway. Sorry for the "newbie" questions but all opinions/comments are welcome. Thanks
Tony
Welcome, I would say if you want mileage, Diesel is your answer. I get 18MPG as long as I keep it under 2000rpm. But, beware that there is a little bit more maintenence costs to a diesel, 15 qts of oil, $12 oil filters every 5k, and fuel filter around $20some dollars every 15K. As for drivability, depends on what you get used to. Diesels are plenty drivable, but you have to get used to having a turbocharger with some lag time before it kicks in. My vote, albeit biased is for the diesel.
Please do a search here in the Superduty forum and the diesel forum.
I caught some "flak" for locking it last time. So, I will not lock this one. But please, gentlemen, do not let this turn into a flamer. ;-)
My .02 is that you cannot go wrong with either.
I have a 02 F350 V10. I also debated and decided to go the V10 way. Here's what I have noticed:
A. If you do not plan on any towing - and you like low maint and the quiet motor - go the V10 way.
B. If you plan on any towing what so ever, go the PSD way..
I have a fairly large boat I pull, a friends "heavy" snowmobile trailer (fully loaded with everything around 10K) and have pulled a friends 27' RV) and each time I do it, I cuss myself
for not getting the Diesel... just not enough power with 7-8 MPG's to boot!!...That's my .02 worth...
The 99 V-10 f250 cc 3.73 auto I had needed to be run at 70+ mph to keep the torque in a sufficient range .The mileage while towing was poor, usually 8-10 mpg.
My 02 F350 cc lb PSD 6 speed is a torque monster and it develops its peak torque at 1650 rpms. With the 3.73 axle and driving in 6th gear, Im only doing 55+/- mph to maintain 1650 rpms.
Mileage towing has been around 16 mpg with the boat and mileage empty has not been under 18.6 mpg!
If you opt for gas I would go with the 4.30 axle to keep the rpms up.
Personally I would never go back to gas for a tow vehicle.

My psd pulls the trailers and my lil ole 5.4 does the tooling around town stuff. I've been thinking of possibly getting into a X,(here comes the flak) ...IF...... and when I do it will be a v10.
If I had to choose between the v10 and a oiler,.....it would have to be the diesel hands down, for the towing aspect of it, our trailer is connected 98% of the time.

I was figuring in a year or so, to turn this SD into the shop parts runner and MAYBE try one of those land barges that you and Monsta drive.
Of course IF that happens it will look a bit more like yours than Monsta's!!!!!!!
I wouldn't mind a rolling movie-arcade-jukebox type vehicle, least I could watch a good movie when I'm driving.

Maybe I'll tell the wife that she needs to dump the Dakota and get into one, that way I can play with it too. See my wife lets me tweak her vehicles too, not just wash them and drive them to soccer games.
>like yours than Monsta's!!!!!!!
Well, I'd like mine to look more like his too!
Bus or no bus, when it comes to haulin' kids (no matter how many) SIZE MATTERS! There's somethin' to be said 'bout all that available space!
