Jacks and Stands...

Im currently out of the engine phase on my '64 f1oo. Now Im going to get started on some other things...such as wheels, cylinders, blah blah blah...and so forth.

I have a small bottle jack that isnt worth diddly squat and I was wondering if you guys had any input on what type of jack and stands I need. Im looking at a 2 3/4 ton jack, but will this be enough for the truck???

Also, are there any jack stands I need to def get or any I need to steer clear of???

BTW, I want some that will last years and years....maybe pass off to my son when he gets older.....

Thanks In Advance,
Phillip

How high do you plan on lifting your truck? You need jack stands to go at least as high as the jack will lift.

Get the heaviest stands you can afford.

Check out the search function. There are a couple of threads here with lots of info on lifting and supporting vehicles.

I like the 6 ton jack stands, not that anything I own is that heavy but because of the height you can get out of them. Also they have a wide "footprint" for stability. Same for my jack, 6 ton too.

Sears usually has a 3.5 ton jack with two 3 ton stands for a reasonable price. Pick up some more stands and you're set.

wdsmithjr is right about the height and footprint of the jack stands. I have both sizes and never would have bought the stds. had I bought and used the heavys first. Depending on their use, I have had to set the short ones on 2X8 blocks to get them high enough at times.

Oh, yeah. The foot print thing.

Let me add this. Don't just get 2. Make sure you get 4.

Avoid the ones with the steel tube and pin setup...go for the ones with a cast center section. I bought some heavy duty ones in the 1960's, and I still use them. They have a very wide base, are made of angle iron and castings and are tall...great for truck frames! I also keep some smaller ones around...the kind with the base formed from heavy steel plate. There are times I need em both.

I would definitely go for over kill on the jack stands. Especially for the rear if you ever need to lift by the frame. I picked up 7 ton units from Harbor freight on sale cheap. They are quite tall.

Anyone use the aluminum floor jacks? I am very interested in them because of the weight savings, though they do not seem to go as high in capacity. They max out around 2.5 tons.

Jegs has a aluminum jack I am very intersted in.
149 bucks... I priced a AC Delco and a Lincoln jack at our local parts store today and they were priced 169 and 225 respectively
I wont be buying one of those
As for jack stands, I have the smaller ones and I HATE them. I will be buying bigger ones from now on

I'm eyeing the $199 that sears has, its rated for 2 tons, a bit higher than the Jegs one.

Just got a 6 ton set from Advance Auto. Were on sale for $29 a pair. Go up to 24". Didn't seem too bad for the price. So far, so good.
