Ford added the turbo to the IH diesel in 1992, and from that point on they got "Powerstroke Diesel" badging. So what's up with the name of this forum??
They may have been labled that (don't know) but the actual Power Stroke is defined by it's injection system. And the real Power Strokes didn't hit the streets till late 94 and 95. The 7.3 turbo was not the same as a Power Stroke. So this site is dedicated to the 6.9/7.3 w/stanadyne pumps. Hope this clears it up for ya.
The pre Power Stroke diesels are the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI (Indirect Injection) motors which were installed thru and including the 94 model year. Injection on this motor is mechanically controlled and the only wire that must be installed for it to run is the fuel shut off solenoid on the injection pump. It also has a mechanical cable to connect the throttle pedal to the injection pump.
The Power Stroke 7.3 DI is a direct injection motor that was first introduced in 94 1/2 through the current model year. It is computer controlled and has to many wires on it to make it run. The throttle pedal is even hooked to the computer instead of the injection pump.
I do not think the Power Stroke name was implyed or used untill the DI motor in 94.
The 7.3 IDI turbo was called the 7.3 Turbo Diesel for 93 and 94.
To my knowledge the 92 did not have the turbo option.
Well you know....Pre Power Stroke.....Pre historic.....Pre Civil war
They are trying to tell us we are old news, antiques, over the hill or some such crap as that.
I kinda think we are like fine wine, the older the better.
Besides, my total operating expenses for my truck last year were 5,857.92. That is repairs, tires, fuel, insurance and license plates on a daily driver only vehicle. Let one of those 6.0 Power Stroke guys beat that.
I am new to this site, I have just bought a 1994 F350 7.3T that has a "powerstroke diesil" badge and was shocked to find that the VIN said it was an IDI. After reading the 1st post it sounds like the badge was applied stock from the factory. Very misleading (shame on ford). Consequently I have found the door tag indicating my truck came with a 3.21 rear end does not match the tag in the diff it supposedly says it has a 4.10 rear end. That explains why I am only getting 12.5 mpg empty 1/2 highway 1/2 town driving
Maybe someone changed out the PS for an IDI? Some people were not very impressed with the computer controlled PS when it first came out. ( imagine that, Ford fans afraid of progress?)
Might just be a transition truck? Maybe on Fri night they shut the line down for the engine change over. Maybe yours was stuck on the line over the weekend, and the guy stickin the badges on the trucks Mon morn. had no idea there was an IDI under the hood?
I have to weigh in on this- make sure you check your vin# before you go any further- do the rivets holding the tag on the dash look original? A lot fo cab swapping goes on in the exciting world of auto body- a fine art you may say
And then you have wonderful used car lot representatives of the not so honest kind- some of them make instant "z71" chevy pickups - or maybe a stroker - with just a sticker...
That may or may not be the case here but it would be interesting what the history is on your VIN nevertheless- especially if everything is matching
checking the vin is what made me question the "badge". the vin does state the IDI. I spoke with a mechanic at a local repair facility and he verified that ford did put the powerstroke badge on the turbo 7.3L in 94' but no badge was placed on the plain 7.3L
I have seen the same kind of thing on a truck we worked on one time at work. It was a 94 with a Powerstroke, but all it had was the turbo diesel signs on it.
