2.3/2.5

Does anyone know the bore stroke for these two engines?

Cylinder bore is the same for the two engines. The 2.5 is just a 'stroked' version of the 2.3L. Not positive on the exact sizes. Heads are the same and interchangeable, but pistons, rods and the crank are not.

So a guy could get a 2.5 from the yard and bolt it in.

If your talking engine swap....abso-f***ing-lutely. Otherwise you'll be re-building the bottom end.

rick e, that 2.5 stroke sounds a little too big. Since the 2.5L is only about 10% more than the 2.3, that 2.5L stroke should be around 3.4??".

Yeah,a 2.5L block is the same as the 2.3L if I'm not mistaken. You can get a 2.5L Stroker crank for your 2.3L or have your stock crank ground to the 2.5L's specs, bolt in your old rods and pistons, and there you have it...A 2.5L or a stroked 2.3L.

Now,for your questions:

2.3L -
Bore:3.780
Stroke:3.126

2.5L -
Bore:3.780
Stroke:3.401

There's your specs .

UH UH! You can't re-grind a 2.3L crank to get a 2.5 stroker, physically impossible. The rod bearing races are farther off the crank centerline (.275") thus giving the extra stroke length. Also the piston compression height is different between the 2.3 and 2.5 (to keep compression down). Sorry, if you want to stroke it, you are looking at replacing the crank, rods and pistons.

2 different blocks

There are two different blocks that you have to be aware of:
1. 2300 large journal (beginning till about 89)<O
2. 2300/2500 small journal (89 up)<O</O
The small journal crank (2300) is also about 3.5 pounds lighter too.</O

This is a racecar forum but has lots of info on 2300/2500, do a search and you will have most of your answers on 2300/2500.

Also Race Engineering (www.raceeng.com) has some inserts to fitting a small journal crank into a large journal block. From what I've read there has been different degrees of success but that was in race cars.
If you look in the catalog section they will have some tech info on rod lengths.

lilcadence, bob's correct. As long as the 2.3L blocks have the same journal size as your 2.5L crank, you should be able to use them. Only things I would use from your 2.5 would be the crank, rods and pistons. This will increase your compression ratio, so be mindful that you will probably need to run premium gas to avoid detonation.
