Secondary air system ???

I have recently done my valve cover gaskets on my 1990 351w and in the process got all tied up by the hundreds of hoses in what i was told was the secondary air system. What does this do for me and is really needed.

It's all to cut down on tailpipe emissions. It does nothing for performance and doesn't affect how the engine runs. It's needed to pass emissions inspections if you have those in your area.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the sensors from the secondary air system are input to the onboard computer and used to adjust fuel mixtures as well as ignition timing. If your distributor doesn't have vacuum and mech. advance I would be inclined to think this is the case.

There have been several posts in the past on converting to non EGR systems as well as distributor swaps.

You might want to do a little more research before getting rid of it as other posts have suggested that you will have a rich fuel condition after removal unless certain other conditions are met, such as re jetting the carb and providing the correct ignition advance/timing.

Thinking about it some more, I believe I read that you will be to lean, not to rich. Not sure, but rejetting the carb. one way or the other may be required.....

'91's are EFI, and if it's the smog system he is talking about, it has no effect on fuel mixtures or how the computer runs the engine. It just helps clean up the exhaust after it has already left the engine. However, EGR does play a role in fuel/spark calculations, so I would definitely leave EGR.

I just swapped my engine in my 91 got rid of all that stuff but kept the line going to the cat converter I was told ( if you still have your converter) the converter needs this air to burn extra hydrocarbons when cold or it could plug up my truck runs awsome.

How did you get rid of everything except the tube to the cat, and still have it get air to the cat?

MY air pump has 2 outlets I cut the pipe going to the exhaust manifolds pluged the holes in the manifolds where the air was introduced pluged the outlet from the pump but left the other line going to the cat, it is still controlled by the computer.

So you left the pump. I misunderstood you - I though you had removed the pump too. That should be ok, since the computer only sends air to the heads when the truck is cold.
