I think i'd want to be armed in dealing with some of these situations.what do you do when attacked by a pitbull or a large attack dog .No thanks. In these situations an officer could be torn to shreads.I tend to fall on the cautious side.

In many jurisdictions, yes they are law enforcement officers.

First off, the ARE Law Enforcement Officers. The law is people do not have the right to mistreat animals. This is what SPCA enforces. Second, in a large number of these cases the SPCA are not taking down rabid animals, they're taking the scumbag abusers to jail. People who abuse animals are criminals which makes people who bust them Law Enforcement. Law enforcement need to carry weapons.

I would be willing to bet that most of those SPCA officers will never once in their career need to fire a weapon while on duty. But why would you send them out unprepared? "Better to have and not need than need and not have" Besides, when your house is getting robbed and you need police there do you really want to be waiting an extra half hour because they were busy escorting SPCA to serve a warrant?

IF they have the power to arrest then they should be armed. If they are strickly a "ticketing" bureau then no. Depends upon the responcibilities assigned to them.

People running dog fighting operations would kill you for trying to stop their profitable venture and that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure many unsavory types are who you visit as an SPCA officer. Maybe better than guns would be to have them be accompanied by rehabilitated pit bulls and let the dogs do the dirty work. Sort of karmic if you think about it.

> do they really have a need to carry guns and nightsticks

I think so.

A lot of these people that torture animals for kicks (I am not talking an old lady with 20 cats) are evil people. The animal officer has a right to defend their life or body when dealing with these people because they care so little about life in general.

A person that takes a dog, ties it in the back of a house, beats, burns, and soaks it with water while starving it to death is not likely to show any mercy if they get an officer down on the ground.

I agree with Rebocardo 100%.

That said, I think that making the SPCA officers look like Police officers gives them more credibility. If some 400 lb woman in a tigger sweatshirt wearing a vest that said "SPCA" on it tried to take my dog, I'd just shut the door and call the Police.

The SPCA cops should be held to the same standards as any other law enforcement agency.
