hey guys. i have an 02 with the 5.4. today when i picked it up from the glass shop and started her up it idled really really rough! almost like it was missing on 2 or more cylinders. it happened as soon as i started it up and it was rough enough that it vibrated the truck pretty bad. the rpm also fluctuated between 500-1000 rpm. i sat let it idle fer a few minutes and then reved it up slightly and it didnt seem to help/hurt it anymore. after about 5 minutes of idleing it slowly cleared up and quit all together. this is the second time that this has happened and now im startin to get a bit worried. i wondered if maybe it was somethin in the ignition mudule, but it doesnt make since that it would fix itself. any other suggestion???
Did they by any chance unhook the battery? Sounds like your PCM may be 're-learning' your trim settings. It should be gone after a couple of warm-up cycles, if that's the case.
Yeah, sounds like a coil pack thing. My friend had a 99 F250 LD with the 4.6 that had really rough idle. Turned out to be a coil pack. Those things really should be shielded better. There was a major problem with coolant leaking from a hose located above the #4 coil on earlier half-ton models. Maybe the heat from the engine evaporates whatever moisture is there and that's why the rough idle disappears after a few minutes.
My truck,(2002f250v10430gear4x4) has done this about a half dozen times. I would like to know why also. I lease my trucks for two years and have found that finding the problem with little things like this from the mechanics at the dealership is like pissing in the wind. If the problem can't be recreated there is no problem. The best answer for me is turn the truck in after 2 years and the problem is no longer mine. Please let me know if you find the answer.
I do love these new sd trucks. I have found the best fix for that once in a blue moon rough idle is to turn the truck off and restert it. that has worked for me every time. Bruce
Just a thought. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) throughs alot of fuel at the system when you first start it up. If they moved the truck around (very short trips) it might have soaked the combustion chamber to the point of a mis-fire condition. I have an 02, V-10, SD, F-350 and a 97, 5.4, Expedition. When I go camping and if I move them around alot at the campground (10 second trips) they will flood themselves and mis-fire the next time I start them up. I do not know if my condition applies to yours, but my 2 cents.
