illumination dimmer switch

I have a 96' Ranger w/ 3.0L V6. I am having a problem with my dash lights not coming on. I replaced my lights behind the dash and they still do not work. I checked with a mechanic buddy of mine, and he told me it was my illumination dimmer switch. Has anyone had experience replacing this part or anyone knows how to test this part before I just go buy one.

Does your dome light still come on? If it doesn't I would think that it would be the switch.

Everything works fine (radio back lights, dome light comes on and goes off when it is supposed to) just my dash lights don't work.
