I have a 60 ford 3/4 ton 4x4. I am looking for a 292 but came across a rebuilt 312. Would I have any problems with the fit and are the motor mounts the same as the 292? If I add power steering, alternator would I just look under the 292 engine for fit and bolt holes to attach brackets? Appreciate any help,
The only fitment problem you may have is the oil pan; you may want a rear sump oil pan. You'll also need to get a truck front timing cover to attach the front motor mount to. Trucks also have a certain style of thermostat housing that points to the passenger side of the radiator. IIRC, cars are sometimes different. And the water pump might be a little different, too.
Funny, I was shopping for a 292 (in Boise) and accidentally ended up with a 312 - mistaken identity by both the seller and me. The engine I bought was in a '58 F250 (I had to pull it myself) and the seller had assumed that it was a 292. I later confirmed that it was a 312 by the big dot on the crank flange. It has the truck front timing cover, a 2v intake, and cross-over exhaust manifolds all like a stock truck 292. I didn't notice that the oil pan was a front sump 'till tonight.
Another odd thing about my engine; it has the stock PCV plumbing. If my 312 was a swap, someone did a very careful job of swapping the truck parts onto a car engine.
