As per the message boards info.

It isn't worth it. Time or Money !

Buy the truck with 4x4 and put your cab on it if it is that bad.

There's a tech article on this site about it, here's the link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...conversion.php
Probably best to have a complete (or nearly complete) parts truck available.

Some guys think it is easier to jack up the body and put the 4x4 frame under it.

All these guys have it right. The time, labour and money is really over the top on one of these jobs. About the only thing you can keep from the suspension and running gear of the truck would be the rear diff and rear springs and shocks, and your wheels and tires. Like it was said above, buy a 4X4 and put your '88 cab on it if you want it to look like an '88. Other than that, if the '88 is really nice, sell it and use the money for a 4X4. Or, keep it and buy a 4X4 and have the best of both worlds.

4x4 to 2x4?

What about going the other way? I have a 4x4 that is a working truck now, but the 5.8 is in great shape and I might like to make a sport truck out of it. Would it be easier to swap the engine out to a 2x4 or convert?

First, you have to find another truck. If it's clean, then an engine swap is easy. Swapping a front end , in my opinion, is just nasty.

The front end swap is no harder than an engine swap, been there, done 'em both....
