DRL modules

Greetings, Northern fellow FTE'ers. I was referred to your Chapter by the moderator of another forum. He suggested that your group might be my best bet for locating used DRL modules since this has been a mandated feature on all Canadian vehicles for a number of years now. I have several vehicles for which I would like to get these modules. The wiring is all in place on them with jumper plugs in place of the modules. Are these an item that is readily available in local salvage yards? And, if so, what price range might they be?

I have also posted a "wanted" ad in the classifieds.

Thank you for any help any of you can provide.

All late model Canadian vehicles are equipped with the day time running light module and they are a direct plug in (I think from 1992 onwards). The problem is finding the little buggers on the car itself. Based on my experiences they they installed the same module on multiple models. For example I stole one off a 1992 Tempo and it fit fine on my 94 F150. Also depending on the year of your vehicle I've seen 2 types. The older ones are a square block about 3" square that fits under the hood somewhere . The second type plugs in under the dash inside the cab. Confused yet I hope not. Here's how I solved my DRL dilemna about a year ago. I searched the web for DRL. There was a site on there where a guy showed pictures of what the 2 types of modules looked like. No one was able to provide an exact location on the vehicle but I atleast knew what they looked and then I went searching the wreck yards. I know for sure the olders styles are a small black 3 " box with cooling fins. On Tempo's they are hiden on the rad suport beside the rad about half way down on engine side. On my 94 F150 it was on the driver side rad support in by the bumper. (easier to feel than to actually see). On newer f150's 97 and up they are under the dash cover on the passenger side. (newer style)
Once you get one they plug in easily. Remember if older style to install in a well ventilated area as they are proned to overheating and early failure. Overall a good safety idea but you can tell that it was a Ford afterthought.
Hope this helps and good luck

DRLs

Truckfarmingcanuck:

Thank you for the response. I have purchased new DRLs through Ford Parts here in the US, but was hoping to find used ones where they are more prevalent-there in Canada. DRL is/was only optional down here, but most models have the wiring in place for it. I do know that I need the "earlier" style for our 91-96 Broncos, F-Series, & Explorers.

Is this an item commonly available through salvage yards? And do you folks have "you-pull-it" type yards up there? Also, if so, what price range? I have bought them through Ford for about $60 US so was hoping to do a lot better than that.

However, if they are prone to early failure maybe used is just buying someone else's headaches. Or the demand domestically is high enough to drive up price & keep availability down.

Any other thoughts?

Thanx,
dn.

Donner,
Yes we do have pull it type yards. I'm not sure what they would charge. As mentioned the hardest part is finding them on the car itself. If interested I have an extra one that I will sell you. Send me an e-mail and we can discuss further. (System won't let me e-mail you due to my low # of posts)
