Anywhere we can get to in the next few hundred maybe 1000's of years sure is. If any non-human complained I am sure that would be a great thing as well.
The problem I see with going to Mars is they are pissed right now at us. I have it on very good sources that they have taken enough of our stuff for their Air and Space Museum.
You see they have one too, albeit it is buried below the surface, so we cannot see it. We have been sending crap (sorry NASA) up there for years. What 12 spacecraft, and only three or four managed to walk around. The good thing they (mars folks) actually created a separate wing for us, (its on the north end of the building) just for the stuff we keep sending up.
Ultimately we need to probably send a peace offering (and not call it a space craft) up to them and wait until we hear back, see if they really want us to visit.
This is the curator of the MASM (Mars Air and Space Museum)
Notice the surprised look in his eyes; cameraman was quick to catch this as it happened.
Ground control just reported another piece of “STUFF” from earth is coming his way!
Before questioning the (...great cost of space exploration!) let's take a look at what this "outer space" technology has done for all of us "land lubbers" Cell phones, DVD's', and E-mail would not be possible if research and development money hadn't been spent towards finding better ways to store and transmit information. A welfare - recipient once said to me:"...they're wasting alot of money on all of this space stuff... " That particular person was spending alot of "pleasant time" on a waterbed mattress which was heated using "outer space...wasted" technology developed for the Apollo space program. This opinion of wasting money on space still prevails after more than 20 years since the example of the welfare recipient. Before you complain about the cost of space exploration please, take a look at the "pie chart" on the back of your 1040 federal income tax packet . You will see that much more money has been spent on "welfare" than has been spent on "space exploration, advanced technology,&etc" We should build a colony on the moon and use it as a stepping stone to mars .
If we had the money to go, I'd say sure, cant hurt. But right now the funding is tight. You do have a point. I think we should look very close at walfare and how/who it is spent on and reallocate it.

Funding can always be tight, it depends on where you sit.
..............We've got a 100,000 bridges and overpasses in this country that need IMMEDIATE repair\replacement.
..............We have mutating viruses that once were infecting animals and fowl that now have made the tranisition to mankind.
...............We have Problems right HERE on our planet that need all the resources that we can afford to invest.
...............Going to Mars with A Manned Spacecraft is a complete WASTE of resources and nothing more than election year Crap.....s.kuteman
Sometimes I wonder if the average American actually realizes that every one of those trillions of dollars the government wants to spend will ultimately be deducted from their paychecks. Let's look at it on a much smaller micro-economic scale: you walk in to an expensive department store. You want lots of items but you only buy the ones you can afford. The government buys them all and puts them on credit.
I have always found the entire space program to be for the most part useless. I would much rather keep all that wasted money in my pocket . How did putting a man on the moon benefit any of us? Any advancements in technology that have come from the space program could just as easily be developed without the space program, and for alot cheaper.

To the extent of developing a method to launch satellites (spy or commercial), the rest is just a quest for knowledge. Again, I say pick your priorities. If you want a couple hundred million for space exploration, you can't rebuild Iraq, or fund the prescription drug program, or fund education, .... Just operate within a budget like the rest of us have to!!
