Will this car/motor combo work?

A buddy of mine has a 93 T-Bird with a V6 in it. He wants to drop in an older (carb) 302, or a 351 and make a dirt track car out of it. Would this swap work without a lot of modification? The rules at his track say the mounts have to be in original position. They did have a 302 injected version of the same car/year. Thanks for any ideas.

I am sure it would, FWD or RWD? I am unfamiliar with these models.

OK, now when they say original position for the mounts, do they mean original for THAT car, or original for that model, like mounts in same position of any car that model that year? If the second then you can put a 351W in there and keep the same mount spots I do believe, you may even be able to fit in a FE but that may be to much for that cr on dirt.

There is a guy here at our local track who is running a 89 bird with a 83 351 in it....not sure if he had to change much or if your mounts are the same as 89 .. I could contact him and ask if you want.

The rules say the original for that model. Just wondering if the 351 and the 302 would both mount identically. I am guessing he will have to move the mounts because of the 6cyl that's in it now. Or am I wrong in thinking that?

Yes MetalSludge, any info would be helpful. Thanks.

The 351 and 302 use the same mounts.

Cool, would the 351 fit? I mean, dimensionally, is it roughly the same size as the 302?

That is something else, the tranny. I doubt the one he has in there is one for racing. Don't know what those cars had. E4OD? Anyway, I looked at the rules again. All they say is a Ford body has to have a Ford motor. The #1 spark plug can't be farther back than the ball joint. As for the mounts, in one paragraph, they say solid mounts may be used. Another paragraph says, stock mounts only, they may be reinforced, or you can chain your motor down.

Yes the 351 will bolt right in, all you will need is 302 motor mounts, 3.8 mounts are different, the trans is probably an AOD but could be a 4R70W, assuming that you will want a C6 or a manual behind the 351, the c6 will require some hammering in the tunnel to make it fit, not much tho and the trans mount is in the same spot
