I have a 77 f150 400 , Im in dire need of getting the heads replaced. The ones on the motor were in a motor I blew at 75MPH, All I did 4 years ago was have new seals put in (no valve job) and had it ground down for more compression. Well, now I cant get the Edelbrock performer to seal completely and have a lean cylinder or two.
Anyway, I have acquired two nice heads from a 78 351M, which was parked in 1985 because of transmission failure. I am gonna drop these heads off and have a 3 angle valve job, new seats seals etc.
Are these heads the same as my 400? My shop book shows a little bit smaller combustion chamber. Other than that, are these the same? Same build heght (valves)? etc??
The block is a rebuilt with about 30k on it. It is fine. But I should have done this when I replaced motor. The machinist even told me to, but I was already out of money from buying a short block.
ANything elese I need to know? I am going monday to drop em off.
PS its good to see this site still goin. I first joined this site in december 1999.
Does a typical rework of cylinder heads include valve guides replacement? these heads have a little rust in the ports from sitting. Will valve guides be needed/recommended? seals too?
The shop will tell you if you need guides or they should. They should also verify the spring pressure to insure the springs are in good working order and may need to shim a few. They just check the lb rating of the spring at a set closed height. The heads should be cleaned by the shop as well so the rust shouldn't matter. Seals are always replaced when a valve job is down.
