400/351m/c

hey everyone, so i have an issue with my 400. i may need new heads and i was wondering what heads will go in thier place? and fit my intake and headers. also if cannot get heads alone i may just get a diffferent engine altogether, which leads to my next question, what motors have same mounting locations and will fit the C6 that i have behined the 400 now? any and all info will help me as i am new to this type of engine situation, thanks a lot.

429 and 460 will fit the C6, but there would other stuff you would need ie exhausts etc. 400 eng mounts are not the same as 351c but may be same as 429-460(?). All the heads are interchangeable as such, but they have different chamber volumes depending year and model so it will change your compression for good/bad depending on application so don't stress about heads. There should be some around to get you out of trouble and they will bolt up to existing headers/exhausts.

For heads 351C 2v, 351M/400 heads will work. the only engines that will bolt right in are the 351M/400's. a 429/460 will bolt up to trany, but motor mounts and exhaust is different. and a 351C won't bolt up to your trany, different bolt pattern.

all right thanks for the info guys really appreciate it. one thing i do know is just before i bought this truck the po had a 390 in it, there is also a "cover up" panel where a stick shift would have been. i assume that a 390 will not fit a C6?

C6 comes with a 390 bolt pattern and 400/460 bolt pattern.

what is the main purpse of your truck?

daily driver occasional towing. Or mudder? If just around town and occasional towing and little off road? I would stick with what you got. Upgrade what you have. If a 400 ford definelty able to upgrade the power. google tim meyer and lots of possiblilities with parts upgrades and keep it simple for your application. c-6 was available in 390's and 460 and 400 fords. Also Hughes performance sell some nice auto's with overdrive for our application and have manual shift automatics which are alittle harsh but doable. I run a manual shift c-6 in my 77. Several options and upgrades for whatever you want and the rest is money $$$$$$$. catch you later.

its mainly a daily driver that i will start wheeling when i get everything safe and fixed. as for compression i havent checked that yet. motor i dont think has too many miles b/c when i bought the truck the 400 was just put in that they got form a friend and they said it was built not too long ago whatever that means, it ran strong before i started having issues, i have access to a cheaper 390 which is why i ask if it will fit thats all. i will also be keeping the C6 i dont want a manual tranny and it shifts nice still, good crisp shifts.
