Hi,
I was woudering if anyone could give me a list of transmissions that will bolt up to an 1989 7.3 non-turbo diesel? It has a zf 5 behind it right now but I need to put another trans in it for awhile until i can get the zf rebuilt. Another question is how could someone tell if the if cavataion developing? I dont what to by a motor that going to puke on me in the next 10,000 miles. Thanks
RJ
My 89 non-turbo has a C-6 in it. Great automatic transmission but only 3 gears so its awful on the highway. Thats about your only choice other than the E40D which is an automatic overdrive transmission but it would take ALOT of time and money to make it work. Your better off, in my opinion, just having the ZF rebuilt and dealing with the downtime in between. Good Luck with whatever you decide.
As far as detecting caviation goes... I've never had experience with it myself but I think obvious things to look for would be excessive coolant consumption, whitish smoke that smells like coolant, coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant. I have been told that a very early sign is a small amount of white smoke visible at idle after a long trip, for example, sitting at a stoplight after several hours of driving.
The four speed manual for a diesel may work although they are a little different in length from bellhousing to transmission mount (only about 3/4 inch if I remember right). I don`t know whether or not the ZF clutch and pressure plate will work on the 4-speed. I agree with mhalter. By the time you do all of that work and buy another tranny to swap into place, you could have the ZF rebuilt or find another good used ZF tranny that you know will bolt in. Good luck.
A good tranny shop can do the rebuild in 1 day unless they don't have all the parts. To swap to a T-18 4 speed you will need to get a bell housing to go with the tranny. And if you have the internal slave cylinder you will need one of those in the external variation. Automatic with the different shifter, cooler and lines would be a lot of work also. I think you should be able to buy a rebuilt ZF tranny and just swap tranny's cheaper than all the other options.
