Is it possible to pull the cam out of my 302 ('74 F100 Ranger XLT)without pulling the engine out? What all would this involve? Pulling the whole front clip off? Would it be better just to pull the engine out instead?
I don't have garage space left (my Fairlane is in there), and my driveway is at a slope and its mostly gravel, so trying to maneuver a cherry picker would be impossible.
Yes...it should be possible. I did it on my '76 390FE engine. What is involved (besides removing the obvious...water pump...etc.) the radiator comes out. Now all you have to do is loosen the grill inserts (total of about 8 screws). After loosen the grill support (vertical support) and slide it over. You may not even need to loosen the grill support...as the 302 is smaller and may allow the cam to go in with just enough space.
Just don't do what a guy did to a 64 chev 409 SS convert. Back in the mid 70's a guy cut a hole in his grill because he couldn't get his cam out. It must have been to much work to pull the grill.
I had to change the Crane cam to milder stock 351CJ cam after I put the 351 Cleveland in my 79.I took the radiator out and left the AC condensor there. It was loose and I could move it,but I didn't have to take it out.
