i have a friend who has changed cams in his 302 maverick. the cam he pulled out is lunati bracket II cam with very few miles .i would like to use it in my maverick but only thing im scared of is the lifters, they werent placed in order after removing them from the engine just tossed in a bag.

can i use this cam with new lifters or should i just not try the cam at all

New lifters, get some comp cam part #153 cam lube put a generous amount on the the cam lobes and bottoms of lifters, if its a flat tappet cam add a bottle of comp cams part#159 zinc additive to the oil. I'd break em in like a new cam.

If the cam and lifters have very little use then you can reuse them. Place the end of a lifter against the side of another, if it is clearly convex when held up to a light then you should be safe. Scuffing them up with 280 or so grit emery paper on the rubbing surfaces might be a good idea too.

As the lifters wear the bases get flat then concave which is when they get mated together.

I don't think I would want to go near any lifters with sandpaper or emery cloth. Is this a common practice?

Use new lifters and follow the complete cam breakin procedure, lifters are cheap.

I agree on the lifters, but no matter how little use the cam has, I don't know that I would reuse it. The key is as Tom Monroe states in his book is that the wear across the top of the lobe does not go all the way across. I just pulled a cam with less than 20,000 and it looked good, but had wear all the way across.

If you look real closs in this picture, you can see the wear goes all the way across the lobe compared to a new one. Look at the shiny spots. Whatever you do, replace the lifters if you don't have them matched to correct cam lobes, you will have issues.

There is one other picture posted on my website that has a different angle.

Clean engine

bjde0b:

That's a nice clean engine you're working on. It's good that you removed the bottom intake manifold cover to clean out the carbon in there. I've gotten swap meet repainted intake manifolds that had a good helping of gunk and glass beads left in there; obviously the intake was "cleaned" without removing it.

The glass of rum and coke is a good idea too!
