Hey mooktank . . . I ain't trashing solid axles. I haven't done a swap but I've owned several rigs that already had one. Read the posts thoroughly before jumping to conclusions. Just because some people discuss things from the perspective of ttb doesn't mean they hate sas.
I'll repeat it . . . when I build a solid axle Bronco, I'll get another 78 or 79 Bronco that already has one . . . or a 70 F100 on a 79 swb frame.
I'm currently in the desert and don't do that much rock crawling. On the job, hills, jeep roads and tractor lanes are my main concern on a daily basis. I'll soon be back in the southeast. I'm getting rid of my SD and will get another rig later most likely already with a solid axle.
For an hard everyday driver and weekend mudder, I'd probably buy the $500 rough country 6in. lift. That's only because I drive moderate highway and gravel roads, gravel roads around here when you hit a bridge will get you a foot of air at 70mph, I personally like the way the TTB lands (more cushion and control) but my pass. side tire will grind the fender on the rebound cuz my coils are shot, where as a SA would displace that kind of "jar" more evenly. Amazinly at 220K of ruff driving all I've done to the suspension/undercarriage system is put in a few U-joints, new shocks and brakes and my tires wear fine, although I hit a stump w/ my tie-rod once, but I realligned it myself and it's been fine for 4 years. Axle bearings and seals are still good, but if I ever find a cheap 70's F-150 4x4 I'll stick a SA on under my 86 as soon as the slighest thing breaks on the TTB. I just hate takin out things that work just fine. You can't beat the durability of a SA, in the 80's they were just lookin for something that handled better, otherwise SA is still the way to go if you wanna jack up the truck.
