72 4x4 ?

Recently purchased my first ford p.u. a 72 4x4 shortbed. The truck has a 460 with a 4sp and single speed t-case.The axles are, rear Dana 60 19 spline 3.73 gear 8 lug,the front is a Dana 44 HP with radius arms 8 lug 3.73 gear disc brakes. The truck has the f-350 emblems on the hood.My first question is did some one swap these axles in or did ford ever put out a shortbed p.u. with these axles. If these axles were swapped in any ideas on what year they might be. I also noticed the tag on the drivers door under Model says 110.I thought fords from that era were 100's.The door does appear to be the original door.If these questions seem idiotic remember this is my first ford.

I can definitely say the 460 is not stock. It's from a later year. I've seen a F100 4x4 with radius arms. I wouldn't go by the hood emblems as the 67-72 hoods all interchange. If you post the vin number, someone in this forum can most likely help you decipher it.

You have a frankenstien. Ford never put 8 lug axles under an F-100. The single speed T-case is F-100, but someone has installed a 3/4 ton rear end and front spindles/hubs. And also as mentioned the 460 was never available. The 4x4s were only available with a 360 V8 or the 300-6. The model number on the data tag is only the same on the first digit. Keith can probably help out here but it seems the second digit is always one number higher. Hence F-250s say 260. Then I think the third digit means something too. Some where in that number is also a designation for 4x4.

bondobucket... F110 means F100 4x4. As far as the 8 lug thing, i refer to willowbilly3's answer. Sounds like you've got a F100 4x4 that someone beefed up. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I think it sounds like a cool truck too, except for the T-case. I would prefer a 205. But a 460 stick shift shortbed with 3/4 ton brakes and wheels sounds like a nice combination of parts. Does it have any kind of power steering?

Thanks for the info guys. The truck does have power steering on it.I was 95% sure the axles were swapped in but needed to hear it from someone else. The truck has around 7 inches of lift with a set of 36.5 x 14 x16.5 mud terrain style tires on it.I bought the truck off of a title loan place for 500 bucks. It was missing the radiator and all the steering linkage, otherwise the rest of the truck was all there. It has the typical rust most of your older model trucks get here in the southeast. It was last tagged about three years ago and had to be one of the nicest older ford trucks around. The truck has blue dot tail light lenses on it.I believe the instrument cluster is out of an older model truck. It is all chrome with a round speedometer and round guages. When i got the truck home i put some gas in it and it fired right up and ran really smooth.I think i stoled the truck for 500 bucks.I have never really been into fords but am very excited about puting some time and money into the truck and getting it back on the road.I have already put a weind stealth intake on it and a detroit locker in the rear.I am working on a 205 case for it.

You lucky dog!! $500 is a steal. We want pictures!! The dash is from a mid 70s F-600 type of truck. That is a very cool mod. Someone put a ton of work into that truck. And with power steering too.(these pickups never had a power steering option)

Willowbilly3 I was building a photo album when my scanner took a dump.I did manage to get one pic in it.When you view this album maybe you or anyone else could tell me how much lift this truck has.It has a 3" body lift i'm not sure on the suspension. It sits on 36.5" tires. When i get this scanner worked out i will get more pics up.community.webshots.com/user/bondobucket

Wow you got taken
If you lived closer I would help you recoup your losses by giving you 500 Canadian Pesos to take it off your hands
I may be wrong but that kind of looks like the stock factory "lift" for a F250/350 maybe they swapped the axles from the frame down onto the F100 frame.......or maybe they swapped an F100 body onto an F250/350 frame.

It's hard to tell much from that picture. Do you have leaf springs in the front or coils? If it is leafs then it is probably a shortened F-250 chassis and they did come with about a 4-5 inch block in the rear. I am not as up on the F-100/150s as some of the other guys so I don't remember how much of a block the rear had on them if any.
If you are running the coil front (F-100/150) you need to look it over real good. Many of those were lifted without all the modifications needed to keep the geometry correct. The bump steer can be horrible and they are a death trap if not done right. Look for things to be mostly parrelell, like the track bar and tierods. Any lift at all and the track bar mount on the frame should be moved down the same amount. I think I have seen track bars with a bend in them that may serve the same purpose. You can get away with an inch or two of lift on the pitman arm but when you get past two inches it should have the pitman arm replaced with one that corresponds to the amount of lift. Also when you get past a couple inches lift the radius arm mounts should be lowered or different bushings used where the axle mounts to them. This helps keep the caster where it belongs.

The truck does have coils. It looks to have a bracket that drops the track bar at the frame which is keeping it parallel with the steering. It also has poly c bushings in it which hopefully means some one has put the correct ones for the lift in it.I own a cherokee that i put a 4.5" lift on so i know what you mean about things needing to be right. Here is another ? for you they have a couple of flat washers between each bolt that is bolting the bellhousing to the engine block which is spacing the bellhousing back about 1/4" and they have done the same between the tranny and the bellhousing which is spacing the tranny back 1/4".The only reason i can see to do this is the trannsmission output shaft must be to long or the bellhousing is to short. My father owns a speed shop and they have a scanner and a digital camera there i will try and get down there today and get some pics of this setup posted today.

Most Fords originally have a plate betreen the block and bellhousing. They may have forgot to put it on. It sounds like they did the job right.
