First, the disclaimer. Do NOT try this at home. This is only for the mentally deranged to attempt.
Well, I started off with a Gibson Sweptside. Not loud enough. So, I figured I would buy some 3" I.D. pipe to replace the muffler. Noone had 3", only 2.5. Then I had a stroke of genious, surely Home Depot would have something in 3". After a little searching, I found a 3" by 5' heating duct. The kind that you have to push together and clip the seam. But believe it or not, I got it to work.
Before I go on, I just want to clarify that this is only a test, not permanant.
Here are the results. A little louder at idle, a lot louder WOT. But not the sound I'm looking for. It got raspy at higher rpms. I want a deeper tone. I also lost a little more low end.
Here's what I want to try next. High flow y pipe 2.5, 2.5 into 3", high flow cat, then 2.5 pipe cat back with magnaflow or ultraflow, leading to a 4" tip. My theory is that I can acheive a lot of deep rumble and keep my back pressure to retain low end power.
Tell me what you guys think, please. Oh, but please don't flame the heating duct thing. I know it's crazy, but that's just me. Thanks again.
hey bro, dont feel bad about the duct on the exhaust. i know of several pullin trucks that are set up with that. im not so certain that these engines triton engines are capable of a low rumble. i think that the raspy sound is just a characteristic of them. but i could be wrong about that cause the 4.6 mustangs arent really raspy. hmmm, have you tried a flowmaster 40 series? i think that that might get ya close. im not really that up on exhaust and what has what effects. im just ratteling off thoughts. by the way, does yer truck cackle alot with this current set up? mine did alot without the muffler and tail pipe.
Did the same thing on my truck, only used exhaust tubing. Cut the muffler out and ran duals from there to 4" tips out the back. Didn't notice any power loss, but then again I'm running 44's with 4.10 gears. I didn't experience any cackling with this setup. I hate that sound anyway. Sounds like a Mustang when you get into it, but it's quiet enough in town not to attract unwanted attention. Now if I could just figure out how to stop drawing attention with the paint and lift.........darn State Troopers.
Hey thewhiteford you should try taking the cat off so we all know if the check engine light will come on. You will surely get the sound you are looking for.

I was told by a mufler shop freind of mine that ther is an o2 sencer before and after the cat so it wont run right after a wile.

My dad has a 2000 F-250 SuperDuty XL Ex-Cab Longbed...5.4 Stick
We recently put on a 40series Deltaflow inplace of the stock muff...
After removing the old exhaust system (which was a pain in the a$$) we took it for a roll with no muff at all...exhaust spittin right out of the cat and there was quite a bit of torque lost. Extremely mean tone tho!!! I have to admit the 40 series sounds great but there is still some torque loss... Oh well... maybe after this one rusts out we'll replace it with a 50 series...

I have the Gibson S/S SI/DO side swept system with a Flowmaster 40 on my 5.4 and I have a very deep rumble, No raspy sound at all, on idle its Blub...Blub...Blub and when ya hit the throttle it sounds even better, very deep. When the truck changes gears (auto) it makes such an awesome noise, tough to describe it, almost sounds as if it were a manual. I think the larger duel pipes exiting the muffler have alot to do with the sound, I think they act like huge tips, amplifying the sound to a deep and low rumble. I love it.
