Hi all,
I have a 74 F600 with a 460 and C6 transmission, the transmission lost reverse and 3rd gear. I was wondering if the C6 i have in my 76 Mercury Grand Marquis will work? The Mercury has a 400 in it and the trans has less than 2,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt. I've compared both and they look the same, accept the Mercury's C6 has ribs on the top of the case and the truck's transmission is smooth.
I would think it would work as well. The bellhousing pattern is the same. I don't know if they might have used a lower 1st and 2nd in an F600 tranny, though. It's at least a possibility worth looking into before making the swap. Talk to a real good tranny guy is my advice.
Although, honestly, a C6 is pretty cheap to rebuild. It might be worth it to do that rather than go through the work of swapping them.
I forgot to mention that the truck did not come stock with a 460/C6 trans. The sticker in the eng. compartment says it came with either a 333 or a 359 cid engine, and a manual trans, but it had the 460 in it when i bought it.. because the clutch pedal is still there... disconnected of course.
The car trans will most likely have only 3 direct clutches, the truck will have 4, the car shifts smoother with less hydraulic pressure, the truck shifts harder with more hydraulic pressure, so it might not pull a full load on the trans for long as the truck weighs more and hauls more.
A lot of the lincolns had extra clutches in the tranny's for the big engine/big boat cars.
There is no reason that it won't work. If you don't like the way it shifts or runs, a shift kit will run you less than 50 bucks and cure all of those problems.
"a shift kit will run you less than 50 bucks and cure all of those problems?"
That is a total crock!
I rebuilt them for a living and stand by my post, and a shift kit will not fix, replace a problem or substitute a major difference in design!
And Lincoln never made "big boat cars", they were all big and used the same trans!
And the C6 trans I just rebuilt was from a MONSTROUSLY BIG Lincoln with a 429 and it only had 3 clutches, and I have never ran across a stock one with 4 clutches.
The differance in those two vehicles is HUGE to say the least!
An F600 and a Lincoln car?!
Heck, the truck empty might exceed the combined gross vehicle weight rating of the Lincoln and whatever boat it might be expected to tow!!

So pretty much the car trans will get toasted the first time I jump on the freeway or on the first grade that I climb? I had a feeling that it wouldn't work. I was thinking about going to the junkyard and pulling a C6 out of an F350 or another 1-ton+ Ford..As I cannot afford to have it's current trans rebuilt. Is there any way to tell if a trans is bad or not? I'm using the F600 to move from Phoenix, AZ to North Dakota so it has a long way to go with a 20' box full of stuff and either an 88 Ranger or an 87 Mustang being towed behind it. It's still driveable with it's current trans, but going 1,500 miles in 2nd gear and no reverse would be plain stupid.
If you have the time, do a little research on these trannies. You might find that the one you have came from a car. If you are only going one way with it, and you don't have the money to do it right then do with what you've already got.
Don't get in a big hurry to get there. Do put in a shift kit that will firm up the shifts and raise the line pressure. No it won't have the fourth clutch, but you already have it and it's paid for. Don't load the crap out of it and lug the engine. Run it in drive when the going is easy to moderate, if the speed drops to where you have to have your foot on the floor to keep up a reasonable speed, then drop down to second and run her easy.
I would say that the tranny that you have that is fresh and from your car would be a better gamble than an unknown tranny from a junkyard.
As for the negative post above. All I can say is that I give what advice I can from my limited knowledge. I'm not always right, and I know I'm not perfect. If you cannot read a post and use your own judgement with reason and experience added in. Then that is not my concern.
Please be safe and have a good trip, no matter what you decide to do.
