New project

Bought a 78 f250 w/400 in it. It is fun. Found another f250, burnt cab, had a 460 put in it. Was told the original owner had it turned into a 550. Everything external is stock though. Could that have been done simply by boring it out, or would it have to be a stroker? Cant get a hold of the guy to ask. Guess I would know when I put my D0VE heads on. Shouldnt there be a bigger cam already to help aspiration with 550 cubes?
Any comments are appreciated.
Thanks,

Andrew

The farthest you can go by boring is to 472, so it has to be a stroker crank, and possibly rods.

You need an awful big carb and high flowing heads to feed 550 cubes, I would bet that there has been some serious custom work done on those heads and they are probably worth some money.

If it is all stock intake, manifolds, egr valve, etc, I would bet that it ain't no 550. Even the big strokers are only 514ci.
Sound like somebody doesn't quite know what they are talking about . But, a good 460 is still a good find!!

You can go to 660 CID on a 460 block.

It just depends onthe almighty dollar.

I thought a 660 was only possible with an SVO block?

Now to find that winning lotto ticket!

The only difference is that the SVO block is aluminum. otherwise its identical to most 460/429 blocks.

It is still extremely difficult and not advisable to go all the way, just htat you could, and I don't think that you could get an engine of that displacement to be functional very long.

It wouldn't stay cool unless it was in a boat and pulled in cooler lake/river water for cooling. The cylinder walls would be way too thin.
Here are what FRPP says about the block and they should know!!

M-6010-A460* 10.322' Deck Height
• Cast iron block with 4-bolt main caps on journals 2, 3, and 4
• Nodular iron main caps
• Can be bored/stroked to produce 598 cu. in.
• Siamese cylinder bores
• Bore range from 4.360-4.600'
• Wet sump oiling design
• 3.000' main journal diameter
• Weighs approximately 290 lbs.
• High-strength block for professional competition (Circle Track, Drag Racing)

Only 598ci is max. anything more would be asking for disaster.
And it is cast iron, not aluminum.

That's cool. Imagine the torque that you could get out of a mildly built 815ci engine? Whoa!!!!

With HEMI heads you are in for well over 1200 horses. Some of those motors are designed to go over 8500 RPM as well, so they are perfect for dragging.
