I just caught part of it. They wont rent a trailer to anyone driving a Explorer supposidly due to all the insurance claims from Explurers being involved in accidents. Can that be legal? I dont think we have heard the last of this and I can see Ford getting involved if for nothing more than saving face.
Hm.....That is messed up. Man that is really messed up. I do not see why U-Haul would be doing something cause these accidents are in no way involved with the trailor.
That sounds like it is the fault of U-Haul for having crappy equiptment, and the explorer owners for not taking care of their tires. I ran 30,xxx miles on the Fireston Wilderness AT tires on my 97 XLT Explorer, and 6000 of those was towing a trailer. I never had a problem, but I always make sure my tires are in good shape, and properly inflated. I was watching a special on TV where 20/20 investigated U-Haul trucks, and trailers and found that there were dangerous problems, such as faulty brakes, and tires that i wouldn't make a tire swing out of.
i tend to agree with MR CMK ive rented many trucks from UHaul and have recently switched to Ryder because of the fact UHaul has gotten too picky with what they will rent and the quality of their rentals. any truck you find within a couple hundred miles of a major city is so beat on and destroyed ( vandalized) that its disgusting. I am hoping that uhaul continues to make bad business decisions so one day we can celebrate the company's death knell
Secondly, the blame for many of these accidents lies with the driver for not properly loading the trailer and driving to darn fast. Not enough tongue weight and 65 mph will cause the tail to wag the dog.
It's a matter of insurance unfortunately. Too many people do too many stupid things and everyone pays for it. U-Haul won't let Jeeps tow certain trailers for the same reason. You have to be an idiot to flip a Jeep but the dealership doesn't test IQ before they'll sell you one so what can you do?
The real problem is sue happy people. No one wants to take responsibility for anything, they always sue the big guy and pass the buck.
Why ANYONE would rent crap (ancient vehicles w/ rusted frames, bald tires, ZERO maintenance) from U-Haul when you can rent decent trucks from Ryder or anyone else, is just beyond me. That company SUCKS and deserves to go out of business.
I see a point in certain trailers
The bigger box trailers, they wont rent to vehicles that dont have a certain GVW or whatever
We tried to rent a daul axle box trailer (about 5 foot tall, 14 foot long) and they won't let you rent it with a S-10
I don't blame them... the thing weighs almost as much as the S-10
They do have crappy rentals tho
My dad and I rented a 5x5x14 trailer from U-Haul, atndem axle, with a ranger....tehn again, I might remember my dad bringin our neighbors truck over there to rent the thing....cause they would not let it be used in conjunction with the ranger.
