All,
I'm not exactly sure what the one ton rear end looks like?
I know the axles are removable without removing the brakes/drums. They are held in by fasteners at the end of the axle.
Most of these rearends require that you remove the diff. cover and pull the "C-clips". This is fairly easy. Remove the bolt in the spider carrier and then push the axles in a little, the c-clip will be exposed inside the spider carrier and you can remove it. The axle simply slides out at this point and you can take the axle down to the machine shop to have the bearings replaced.

Yep, the 44HD has the larger hubs like the Dana 60. Is is disk or drum? If its disk it's just like replacing your rotor. Pull the caliper so you can take off the rotor. Pull the hubs, take off the spindle nut/locks and the rotor should slide right off leaving a spindle buried in a greasy mess If your lucky you don't have to replace your races
It's a closed knucle with drum brakes, is there a bearing inside the hub that is very hard to get out? Also I went to the local NAPA to get bearings and they did not list any for that axle. What gives, do I have to take them out and have them matched up?
Ahh, haven't had a closed knuckle of those axles apart for a while. I don't think it was too big of a pain getting them apart, Napa should have the bearings. It all depends on how hard they look.
do you know hom to take apart the hubs remove the bolts that hold the lockout pull the lockout off remove the snap ring on the end of the axle if you have the tapperd hubs there is also a snap ring in the hub remove it pull the gear(s) and spring next are the two spanner nutsthe outside one is a lock nut the a spacer lock washerthis has a notch that goes in a slot on the spindlepull it out the one more spanner nut on the drukm brake modles you can remove the drum from the hub by taking out the three screws that hold it on (Ihad to use an impact drive to get mine loose) remove your hub any good manual has a picture you can follow bring the bearings to the parts store by the way the 44hd isjust a 44 with big hubs the one tons all came with 60's up front and that was only the crew cabs in the 70's till 78
thanks plow- Did my wheel bearings over the weekend. Was very easy. I think I am going to buy a press soon, before I do the other side. I used a brass drift to get the races in and out. I also bout the 4 point spindle socket, so now I'm all set.
Thanks guys
