Hey guys, I had a little bit of trouble with my truck this weekend after i had run a fule system cleaner through it a week ago. I rplaced the fuel filter on it and man was it nasty. There was about a 1/4" of sludge or some kind of crap in the bottom of the canister where my filter sits. I have a '72 ford F100 Ranger XLT. The tank sits behind my bench seat in the cab. How hard is it to take the tank out adn replace it or is even possible to get another tank like the original If not is it still possible to take out and clean up the old tank and rinse it out? Any ideas or has anyone approached this task yet? Thanks.
They come out without too much trouble, I removed my in cab tank not too long ago when it developed a leak Drain it, disconnect the hoses and what have you, and start unbolting. There should be just five or so along the top and like four along the bottom. It should just lift out after that.
I'm sure you can clean it out without too much trouble. I don't know if there are certain cleaners you should use or not use, so someone else will have to enlighten us on that one. Once I pulled mine out it went straight in the garbage...or it might have gone in the back of my dads old Chebby...same differance
I once got a bad tank of gas when living in NV, one winter day.
I got about 1 block and it started running bad. Well, I got it home at about 20 mph for 3 long miles. Saying oh baby please get me home one more time...lol Well my cab tank was ok just full of some
brown crap that was almost like a gel kind of stuff. I removed the tank and the sending unit. Ok it did have stuff stuck to the bottom so. I used a coat hanger and a old sock to kind of mop it with carb. cleaner. I could not do the far end of the tank. Hmmm so, I ended up using roofing pea gravel in the sock and tilt the tank so the sock would slide back and forth mop cleaning the hard to reach area. Rinsed with clean gas. Replaced filter, clean fuel line, open top of carb removed float suck out the crap in the float blow. Shoot some carb cleaner throught the passages and jet holes. Put clean gas in tank fire it up and say a few bad words about that gas station. Hope this has helped to.

Tank is easy to take out, mine only had 5 bolts uptop and 2 on bottom ( but 4 bolt holes on bottom on the tank, but not in the cab ). I rinsed mine with water and dawn dishwashing liqid, and I threw it on the 4wheeler trailer and went real fast and hittin the brakes and swerving to slosh it around. It got alot of crap out. O yes, and while putting the tank back in, be careful, because on my truck the bolts so through the back of the cab, and i accidentally pushed 2 out by hitting them with the tank, it was hard to fit my hand inbetween the bed and cab to get them back in too. My neighbor busted out my backglass awhile back with one of his golf *****, so it helped being able to hold the nuts in place while getting the bolt started
Yes, not too hard to get out. I'm even contemplating putting an under the bed replacement in so I can get a few more inches of leg room. About the only thing I don't like about these is there leg room.
Thanks guys. So, you all think that I just need to take it out and clean it and not worry about trying to replace it! I will try that after I run this tank of gas through it. Thanks a lot.
jndeere,
Theres is a tank sealer that you can use even if it's rusted. My ex-father inlaw's 70 f250 C/S in rail 2nd tank started leaking gas so, I got him some tank sealer at a "GOOD GUY'S swap meet car show that come's around Northen Ca. about 3 or 4 times a yr. I can't remember the name of it but it was like $27.00 bucks for a Gal. can and primer & cleaner. Well he made a patch and used JB Weld and coated the inside of the tank a few times like the info said to do. That was 3 yrs. ago and is still not leaking to is day.
