Big Brother gotcha ...

A driver of newer GMC pickup was convicted of speeding in MD, which caused an accident that killed one person, and seriously injured another. He got 8 years in jail. (Part of the sentence was due to him leaving the scene)

He was convicted due to information garnered from the "information module" now on many GM products. Didn't GM say this information would not be used for law enforcement purposes, but only to gather information for maintainence issues?

No doubt what he did was wrong, but I don't like the government getting into my face in every facet of my life.

How many other manufactures are going to have these "Information Modules" on their vehicles?

What was he driving? The corvette is the only car gm makes that has a "black box" as far as i know.

However....most new cars (not gm exclusive) have MANY control modules located throught the car for just about every sytem. If one was smart enough...you could obtain information from these modules, as some do have rather long memories. I've never heard of anyone actually doing it though...

It was a GMC pick-up that was shown on the TV news clip. I don't know what year.

My dad was telling me(he is a master mechanic for GM) that on-star records such things.

Since when does GM decide what is used for law enforcement purposes, Really you must be kidding me, and I was under the impression that all obd-2 cars record and store what the driver does with the cars controls in "non volatile memory"

These types of things will be fought out in the courts for years, and the government can and will get anywhere they want, look what they did to Limbaughs medical records? lawyer/client wont be privelaged next

They alway's tell you it won't be used for this=that=anything except for the time they don't tell you it will be used to put you away. It's not going to change soon. Now they are fingerprinting everyone at airports. (I know, only foreigns). But how long before we are all going to go through it? My guess-6 months to one year!

Ohio has been using this data for a while now, Police Departments can purcahse their own computer that can download the information. Another point is this info can void your warranty if the dealer reads the info and consider it as having been abused.

Alan, you feel you have that turned off successfully ?

Insurance companies also use the information form your PCM, mayhaps the information is used by police accident reconstruction experts ?

Dont 76 trucks have lap belts only anyway , which actually hurt you more than help you in an accident ?

I would file a lawsuit for invasion of privacy. I thought you had to give them consent to check for information like that.
