in a mostly stock 390, how big of a cam do you think i could fit with out have to machine or replace any parts, and where or what kind would yal recomend
I would like to give you a standard answer but you would need to have your springs tested. They can be way off spec and that is what is going to determine how high it will let you rev. A spring kit can be bought for less than $100. That would get you springs to get a cam with about .550 lift. Go to www.cranecams.com and look at their FE powermax hydraulics. The 343941 is a great mild performance cam.
I have had a melling cam in my 390 for about 6 months now and I love it. Valve lift is .510 int and .536 exh. and the dur is 214/224 at .50. Can't go wrong with Crane as Ratt said and spings would be a worth while investment. If you decide to go with a Melling cam part # 24205, I would get some Crane Springs part #99839-16 for about $90.00.
It looks like MOST stock springs will handle .530 lift in 1969. This requires valve guide clearance to be checked and the springs must meet specs. It also means the cam spring requirements must match the OE specs.
Installed height-1.82" pressure85-95lbs. Open-1.38 209-231 lbs
The open pressure is a bit low for most perf. cams requirements, I think.
hey green, where did you get your headers, cause just yesterday i was called about my truck being in the shop, and the headers i have gotten dont work cause they hit the steering shaft, and basically useless, i called the ford dealership, oreillys, and summit and they dont have **** for me
Texan,
Sorry it took me so long...Computer problems. Anyway I brought ceramic coated dynomax headers from Summit. Pulled starter for passenger install and drivers side was easy. Now that doesn't mean that my headers are not uncomfortable close to my gear box and starter but, what can I expect from headers cost me under $300.00. I wrapped gear box and starter with heat shield. I also paid $130.00 to muffler shop for new pipes and mufflers becuase i needed some trick bend in the pipe aroound the tranny selector.
