I know I may be jumping the gun here, but I'm to itchy to wait. For anyone that has had problems in the past with surging Idle on the '03's 6.0L, there may be a new solution to try.
I spent 2 months researching and a total of about 3 weeks in the shop to figure it out. After changing dealers and receiving the best service I ever have, they have made me a very happy ford owner. The tech first believed that my surging/irratic idle had something to do with the air intake/eqr system. After replacing a turbo, Intake manifold, and an egr cooler.....I was stilling experiencing problems. Back to the dealer we go. Then it was thought that mabey the alternator showing spiking voltage on the test was causing the PCM to act up......nope, not that. Then finally after a full day of chatting with the ford tech line and the hood up all day, the tech replaced the Injection Pressure Regulator. BINGO!!! I picked the truck up the next morning, very unsure of what I was to find when driving home. I must say, the truck didn't run this good when I bought it back in June. The truck runs quieter, stronger, mpg back up from 15 to 18-20, and yes...no longer that agravating surge at idle.
I was told that the regulator was not allowing proper pressure on the High pressure oil injection system, thus the injectors were not actuating correctly, causing inadequte fuel delivery. Makes sense I guess. Anyhow, I'm now a very happy person....and hopefully it stays that way. I just hope I'm not jumping the gun here, but so far so good.
Woohoo!! I hope it really is a fix for ya. I've had the surge/buck/romp for a while now and they keep throwing egr's at it because it throws egr codes. It never fixes it.( it does it with egr unplugged too) It gets crappy mileage when running this way also.
It's getting pretty embarrassing at stop lights when she does the romp romp romp. I'm getting good at the old sheepish "I don't know what the hell its doing" look at the guy beside me.
Keep us updated if the fix continues to be for real so I can take this info to my dealer. Thanks.
I posted this same question about 2 hours after you did. Mine just started doing it this weekend. How much did it run you for the new Injection Pressure Regulator?? is it something you can purchase then install yourself??
When I was experiencing problems, it was doing it sporaticly. I would get a run of about 30 miles of "good" running, then it would start to act up and run like garbage. When it did run like garbage, it was all the time. No matter what I tried, it still ran crappy. I unplugged the egr....still did it, drained a little oil out thinking it was foaming up a bit and messing with the High pressure oil for the injectors.....still did it. Thought maybe that when the tech did the latest reflash, he didn't erase the KAM (keep memory alive) and allow the truck to relearn, so I erased it myself using the procedure on this site....still did it. No matter what was done, nothing would fix it. The EGR was actually replaced once thinking that it was the problem. I guess the tech forgot the part about road testing after a repair, because it was acting up as soon as I left the parking space at the dealer.
Now, one little repair and the truck runs better than it did before, no question. I'm not sure what the cost would be however, mine was done under the PT warranty. If you have under 100,000 miles on the truck, you should be covered also. The location is somewhere under the turbo from what I understand. It could be a project if you do it yourself, but if your good with a wrench, don't see why you can't. But check your warranty first, no sense doing it if you don't have to pay for it.
