I have a 99 Ranger 4x4 4.0 off road pakage and I am planing on changing the oil in both diffs. I was wondering if anyone knows what weight to use and how much each diff takes?
although pricey think about the mobil 1 synthetic. I just put it in the diff (75w90) and they have a heavier one also. I also put the valvoline synthetic ATF in the gearbox, shift real slick now.

What happens if you dont put the frition modifier in the limited slip?

You might feel some "chatter" from the back end as you go around turns. That's the limited slip axle being too aggressive. The friction modifier helps with that.
But keep in mind, you want to use as little of the friction modifier as possible in order to retain maximum limited slip action. So if you have no chatter, then leave your diff fluid alone and don't add anything. If you do have some chatter, then you want add a little bit of the modifier, drive around test it, add more if necessary or don't, as the case may be, etc., until the chatter is gone. Less is better in this case.
