Inside the engine compartment
Here in Scotland you might come across another Explorer once a week if your lucky, and as for the local Ford garage - they like to fit replacement parts (even if it doesn't solve the problem). I have a 97 4.0L SOHC Explorer...so guess what?
Recently, the heating system has been stuck at very hot and the garage decided it was faulty controls!!! No difference of course after shelling out 430$, and now the A/C has stopped working, though the pipes are cold in the engine compartment.
So I took the plunge and did the 'Blend Door Fix'... seems to have cooled things down to a more acceptable level and I can now adjust from warm/coolish to hot (might need to adjust the position of the pin), but no real cooling effect when selecting A/C or Max A/C. While testing the 'Fix' with the engine idling, I was trying to see if the A/C pipes were producing condensation and could hear a tick/click coming from an upright pipe with a black plastic cap which is to the right of the radiator as you look from the front. As I held the pipe to sense if the sound was coming from there, which it was, I could also feel a buzzing from this vertical pipe which occurred after the click. I have scanned a picture from the Haynes manual and circled the pipe, but I see I am not allowed to post an attachment...
Could anyone advise what this pipe is and what function it has?
Regards
TartanDon
