Well, today I went and got an entire roof for my house!!! all in one shot on my pickup. It is the first time I have actually seen the truck squat and let me tell you it wasn't much I put a whole pallet of shingles on it plus the cap shingles flashings and tar paper. I don't know how much it weighs but when I told them I was going to pick it up they looked at me like I was crazy!!! they loaded it with a fork lift and the truck finally rode nice!!! the first time it ever rode good felt like an empty 1/2 ton pickup. I would love to see a brand X try that!!!!
John
My brother saw a brand "X" truck try the same thing only w/ a couple sheets of plywood on top. The frame was bending so badly they had to take some of it back off. I used to have a 76 250 ext. cab, long bed, camper special. You talk about a tough truck! I threw just over a ton of gravel in the back and it was still butt up. It wasn't even touching the helper springs yet! That truck was a beast.
I would like to see a ch**y carry get this 4.3 tons of gravel in the back of their truck. my 350 diesel squatted a little (hehe) but ya cant put her down. the guy at the pit said we usually put 2 tons on and i go double it baby. god i love fords.
That is the truth, i live near a chevy dealership and a ford, but watchin all the new chevies having to go back after a few months cause they are busted. i swear to god, i have seen at least 10 people drop off a new chevy and walk over to the ford dealer, it is across the road from each other, and i must say i was laughing. god i love fords.
LAST EDITED ON 05-Apr-01 AT 08:36 PM (EST)[p]I think I have to complain. A stock Chevy has a GVWR of 22000 pounds, subtract the weight of the truck it self and your left with 11 1/2 tons. I'll admit I'm probbably confused about the numbers, but when I last compared a F-350 to Silverado 3500 the F-350 only had a 1/2 ton extra capacity. I remember owning numerous Chevys, my family used to own a '85 Suburban, I don't remember the mileage, it was a daily driver for 15 years straight, only had to have 2 engines and a 3 transmissions because the rebuild shop really messed up on the second transmission which it had. If I remeber correctly it frequently pulled large camper trailers, one time on a trip to Flordia, which part I don't remeber but it was at one of the disney theme parks, from Austin Texas, and numerous trips from Austin TX to a tiny town in the SW corner of KS, a 1000 mile one way tip. If I remeber correctly, the only major repair ever put into that suburban was the engine replacement, everything else was scheduled maintnance. That is pretty good, especially considering I own a Ford Which had to have it's engine replace at 150000 miles. Second Chevy my family owned was a '91 Chevy, again I don't remember the mileage, it was a work truck and a daily driver lasted great original diesel engine, no minor repairs the only reason it was sold is because I couldn't drive at the time and no one else in my family wanted it. I'am told it was also a very hard worker. My dad's best truck was a 1982 brown Chevrolet pick-up with a 6.2L diesel engine, back in that time he considered himself a cowboy and constantly was towing horse trailers across Kansas and other states, again a daily driver. Ever seen a pick-up pull a semi loaded with cattle through 2foot deep? It happened in the little brown pick-up, of course the semi was running, it didn't move fast, but eventually was pulled out of the mess it was in. Should I say anymore? So, I highly believe that a Chevy is a respectable name. I have seen them outlast Fords, I have seen Fords outlast Chevys. I don't believe Chevy should be typed in as though it is some kind of bad word. I think you should look a little harder at the capabilites of a pick-up before you post this stuff. Rateings are only rateings, I remember the stock '91 chevy outpulling it's rateing numerous times, and itt still ran perfectly when we sold it. Also, if I must say I like the looks of a Chevy as much as I like the looks of Fords.
Logan, what kind of chevy do you have???? I have never seen any pickup with a 22,000 gvw let alone a chevy!!! you can complain all you want but the fact is a ford will carry more than a chevy any day you want to load them up!!! my truck is a 3/4 ton and has a gwvr of 8800 pounds and they dont make a chevy 3/4 ton that will hold the kind of weight I put in this truck and if that isn't heavy enough let me tell you about a truck my dad has it is a 1 ton F350 with 13 leafs in the rear springs mine has 4 leafs and is rated for 8800 top that with a chevy!!! John
Check the Chevrolet website, they advertise the number everywhere, the 2500 HD. I don't remember exactly what the number was though, but I will say that the rateings between a Chevy and a Ford should no be far enough off for someone to trade a brand new Chevy for a Ford. Besides, The Chevys have an equal if not more powerfull engine than the PSD but it should naturally get better mileage because it is smaller. I'm not saying Ford is a bad brand, but I can guarantee that Chevys are not as bad as "ford4x4offrd" is claiming they are.
I must say logan i admire your boundary crossing between the brands it is nice to see someone with such an open mind, but like i said that is you. i have owned 2 chev**s and under 100,000 they both needed a trans. and one needed so much motor work that it wasnt worth it. i now have 2 fords both over 200,000 miles and no major repairs besides what i brake on the trail. now i am not tryin to get in an argument and im glad you have had good luck with them but i have not and i personnally just cannot stand them anymore, i got a ford and they have never let me down. but we all have different experiences but once again i applaude you. god i love fords

I just checked the Chevrolet website, I competly messed up, the GVWR of a Chevrolet 2500HD is 9200lbs, comparable F-250; GVWR 8800lbs. For a silverado 3500, the GVWR is only 200lbs higher than a superduty F-350(11400 vs 11200). Sorry about that mistake, it was stupid, but it has ben a long time since I have gone to the Chevrolet webiste and now I'm not even sure where I got that number from. God I love Chevrolets(and Fords)!
it may say chevy can handle more than a ford but that id because ford trucks are under rated. I have a friend that had a 2000 f-250 with a v10 and he pull a goose neck trailer with a lot of weight on it and he pulled it at 80 mph easy and when he went to trade it in the only thing wrong with it was that the bar underneath the bed and above the gas tank was bent a little bit now if he was to try and do that with a chevy his frame would have bent the first time he did it. I am not saying that chevy's are a bad truck but a chevy is more of a preppy mans truck and a ford is more of a working mans truck. I have a chevy myself it is a 81 chevy 1/2 ton long bed that i am restoring and it is going to be my toy but for work the only thing i would use is a ford.
Well we have a chevy suburban that pulls a car trailer with 180k and a new motor good truck other than the motor.
What I have seen in practice is a Ford f250 with the powerstroke smoke the dodge (2500 or 3500 not sure) with the cummins turbo deisel. Both were pulling roughly equal trailers and on the interstate the ford could maintain 75mph even uphill but the dodge couldnt hold it up the hill. The ford's motor would really come to life on the hills, you could hear the turbo roar on it. The guy driving the dodge was pissed when the ford could keep up and the dodge couldnt.
LAST EDITED ON 06-Apr-01 AT 00:29 AM (EST)[p]Burto, how do you KNOW that the frame of a Chevy would bend under such a load? I must say that right now the Chevy and Ford pick-ups are exactly equal(imagine that!), a Chevy diesel is about the same if not better than a PSD, a brand-name doesn't mean "weak frame". As far as rateings go, a sliverado 2500HD has higher payload and towing capacity then a superduty F-250, I would almost bet my life saveings that next year(or maybe a few years later, but very soon) there will be a 3500HD, there was only one rateing witch the superduty F-350 had higher then a Chevy 3500, I don't remember what it was but it was real close. Look at the rateings and you can see right now they are almost exactly alike! If anything Chevrolet is rateing their pick-ups just a little "better"(higher towing/payload capacity) than Ford. Check either site, obviously the numbers are uh, "honest". I hate to say this,(Ken is probbably wanting to cancel my membership right now ) but I think that the Chevys are while, really out-preforming Ford.
Logan
I forgot to mention to Andrew the Cummins engine is while, a POS. My family owns some Dodges(I hate to admit being around Dodges) which has caused me to loose all my faith in Dodge. Also, if you go to http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com you can read a few articles about the Duramax smoking the PSD really bad.
LAST EDITED ON 06-Apr-01 AT 08:09 AM (EST)[p]Oh I agree, I do not like dodges at all! I know one guy that bought a brand new 1/2 ton dodge and they had to do a transmission like twice in a matter of two months. Also there was a reoccuring porblem in the stearing. I love seeing the powerstroke smoke the cummins, it happens all the time.
Oh and logan: Also, you go to many places and read about the powerstroke smoking the duramax. I dont know which is better but ive heard both sides. Im sure that they would not put many articles of powerstrokes beating duramaxs on a sight dedicated to guys with GMC/Chevy deisels, so i really dont hold those articles in high regards. They could have recieved 50 letters showing ford winning and 10 wih chevy and only post the ten with chevy winning so you really cant rely on that sight you gave me as being objective.
I dont know what my f350 from 89 is rated for but i had a little over 4 tons in it yesterday, and shes doin just fine, but i live near saratoga springs ny which is one of the biggest horse racing tracks in the country so everyone up here has a gooseneck trailer and my buddys father was lookin for one and when he called up different places to get an estimate on putting the receiver in the first thing they asked was what kind of truck, and hes like a ford, and they said if they were going to do that to a che** or dod** they would have to reinforce the frame rails cause they will pull out under the load, and this was last yr. just my $.02. god i love fords
